While most sequels have many sacred rules to help them succeed, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will actually need to break one. The upcoming addition to the Guardians franchise, directed by James Gunn, has been highly anticipated as it will be the final chapter for the ragtag space explorers. Much has changed since the original 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy, including new additions to the team and even multiple deaths.

As the movie attempts to close out the arcs of many beloved characters, Gunn faces the daunting task of balancing many different endings within the span of one movie. While some Guardians may remain in the MCU, it is known that GOTG 3 will be the final appearance for others, such as Drax, as Dave Bautista is exiting the MCU. But before the conclusion of the trilogy, there is one important storyline that must be completed, even though it will break a cardinal rule.

Gamora & Nebula's Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Story Must Repeat Vol. 2

2014 Gamora variant frees Nebula in Avengers: Endgame

When it comes to sequels, not repeating the same storyline from the movie prior is a rule that is hardly ever broken. However, GOTG 3 needs to repeat Gamora and Nebula's story of sisterhood and reconciliation in the upcoming film to provide a satisfying end to both their arcs. The sisters had a turbulent relationship growing up, but much of it was born out of self-protection, as Thanos used them for his own evil reasons. Now, they need to reconcile again.

In the trailers for the upcoming film, 2014 Gamora is the new leader of the Ravagers in GOTG Vol 3 while Nebula is with the Guardians, flipping their original story on its head. This time, it can be Nebula talking to Gamora and convincing her to join the Guardians as well as showing her what family means. Because the storyline wouldn't be exactly identical, it would still add interest to the plot and move the story along while providing even more depth to the characters.

Gamora and Nebula Need A Real Chance To Be Sisters

Gamora & Nebula face off in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Nebula joined the Guardians in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 after she and Gamora finally came together as sisters for the first time. Unfortunately, Gamora died shortly thereafter in Avengers: Infinity War leaving Nebula alone to deal with the aftermath of the Blip. If their reconciliation occurs early in the film, it will give them time to truly be the sisters they were always meant to be, moving past Thanos' abuse of Nebula and favoring Gamora when they were young.

Now that 2014 Gamora has slipped into the main MCU timeline, they must once again reconcile and have time to bond and heal as sisters, especially since family has been a huge theme throughout the Guardians movies. Given the complexity of their characters and the reactions that parallel growing up with an abusive parent, it's important that their relationship is given room to shine in the final Guardians movie. While future movies may explore it even further, deaths are likely to occur in this final installment, and Gamora and Nebula aren't off the table.

Will Nebula or Gamora Die In GoTG Vol 3?

Guardians of the galaxy gamora nebula

Gamora is alive in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after her death in Infinity War, thanks to a timeline wrinkle. Given that she has already been killed off and brought back, it is unlikely she will die again. However, that doesn't mean she will remain in the MCU. There can be different ways to phase out her character, such as having her retire or go back to her home planet to help rebuild what Thanos destroyed. However, there have been no confirmations of future appearances, and with the Guardians franchise ending, the MCU may not have much of a place for her anymore.

Nebula, on the other hand, may die in this upcoming installment. Her sacrificing herself for her sister would be a tragically beautiful end to her arc. She used to hold so much resentment towards Gamora when Thanos would torture her and Gamora didn't stick up for her or attempt to save her. Her death, following a second reconciliation between the pair, would close their chapter well, and while it would be heartbreaking, it would allow both sisters to finally be at peace in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
