James Gunn is back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and now he's issued his statement on his rehiring. Long before Disney made the decision to fire Gunn from the third Guardians of the Galaxy film due to controversy over some of his old tweets, there was uncertainty about whether or not he'd return to begin with. It was only well after he agreed to return that his old tweets started to gain attention online, and the reaction to them saw Disney make the decision to remove him from Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

It has not been an easy time for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in the months that followed, as the movie was originally targeting a start of production late last year. There were several names rumored to be possible replacements for Gunn, but no one was hired and the project was left in limbo as a result. Many Gunn supporters still believed there was a chance he could be brought back, but even they thought the chances of it happening decreased when he decided to write and direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC.

Throughout all of this, Gunn has been completely silent on the fallout of his firing and future projects, as he did not post on social media at all. Prior to his firing, Gunn became a favorite director for many fans due to how interactive he was online to answer questions or tease what the future holds. Now that his reinstatement is official, Gunn has hopped back on Twitter to share his thoughts on Disney reversing their decision and offering thanks to everyone who supported him.

Due to what many felt was a quick overreaction on Disney's part, Gunn had no shortage of supporters in the wake of his firing. A Rehire James Gunn petition amassed hundreds of thousands of signatures and the hashtag #RehireJamesGunn became incredibly popular online. His Guardians of the Galaxy cast members all signed a statement supporting the movement that Disney should rehire him, while other members of the franchise like Michael Rooker, Michelle Yeoh, Glenn Close, David Hasselhoff, and Kurt Russell all voiced their own support.

Now that he is officially back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it will be fascinating to see how the movie evolves due to the delay that will occur. Instead of helping kick off Phase 4 as originally intended, the film may not arrive until the end of the phase now. This could change what characters are involved, the state of the universe, and much more about Gunn's "off the chain" script, but we'll have to wait and see exactly how it plays out. As for right now, fans can rejoice in Gunn being rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and know that he appreciates all the support they've given him over what was surely a rough couple of months.
