Writer/director James Gunn reveals he has started storyboarding his Marvel Cinematic Universe return, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Work on the threequel has been underway since 2014 when Gunn teased he had ideas for the film and the basic story for the first sequel on the heels of Guardians of the Galaxy. The filmmaker would officially sign on to write and direct a third film in 2017 after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 became a critical and commercial success.

Development would be upended, however, as conservative publications resurfaced old tweets from Gunn in response to his criticisms of then-President Donald Trump and Disney and Marvel Studios severed their ties with him. Gunn would take his talents to Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe for The Suicide Squad and its HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker before ultimately being rehired by Marvel and Disney for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and allowing him as much time as he needed to complete work on both projects before coming back. With filming now complete on the John Cena-led show, Gunn is gearing up to return to the MCU.

One fan took to Twitter to ask Gunn about an update on the release date for The Suicide Squad. In response to the question, the filmmaker noted he isn't aware of the date for the home media release and citing his busy schedule editing Peacemaker and storyboarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as reasons for not knowing. Despite all of his recent projects being blockbuster-scale productions, Gunn has proven to be one of the most efficient filmmakers in the genre. Production on The Suicide Squad ran from September 2019 to February 2020 and arrived this past month to rave reviews from critics and his decision to throw Peacemaker into his schedule between it and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 came as quite the surprise to many for the back-to-back nature of their shoots. With that in mind, his confirmation he is currently storyboarding the MCU threequel is rather promising for the film's arrival.

Though no official start date has been confirmed by anyone involved, Chris Pratt and Gunn have both confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would begin production in late 2021, with the star stating November as the beginning of shooting. Gunn's work on storyboarding the film at this point does point to this being an accurate timetable as that stage of development is generally in pre-production, the final stage before shooting begins on any film. With Gunn well-known for keeping followers updated on development on projects, word should be right around the corner for when production officially gets underway for his potential final MCU film.
