Chris Pratt's latest update on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sets up a massive challenge for James Gunn. The Star-Lord actor is teaming up with the filmmaker for the third time in the MCU after they started working together in 2014 on the original Guardians of the Galaxy film. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may very well be their final collaboration under Marvel Studios, so both are understandably very committed to delivering a great film.

Specific plot details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remain under wraps, but the film's narrative (as well as its highly anticipated soundtrack) was decided long ago. Gunn has been protective of what to reveal about the film, only sharing small but exciting updates including the casting of Will Poulter as Adam Warlock. He has also been open about how special the threequel is to him and how it would close out the original Guardians of the Galaxy team's story in the MCU. Principal photography has wrapped and James Gunn is currently working on editing the film.

That's where the new update comes in. In a recent interview, Pratt calls Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 a "true masterpiece" after checking in on the filmmaker who is busy with post-production. Chris Pratt says that Gunn is very happy about everyone's work, saying that the threequel is the cast's collective and individual best work in the trilogy. This amps up the excitement about the film, but this tease also adds pressure on Gunn as it sets people's expectations of the movie very high, which could ultimately backfire.

Could Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Really Be A Masterpiece?

This doesn't mean that Pratt is wrong about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being great. It's entirely possible that the film is a masterpiece, especially considering everyone involved. Gunn was able to turn what was otherwise an obscure Marvel superhero team into a fan favorite in just one film via Guardians of the Galaxy, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 features the same core cast. Both of his DCEU projects, The Suicide Squad and HBO Max's Peacemaker were praised, as well. That being said, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 wasn't as well-received as its predecessor, indicating that Gunn could still miss the mark. The problem with Pratt's update is that he doesn't give anything specific, so people are left to come up with their interpretation of what he means when he calls it a "true masterpiece," and it risks overselling the movie.

What We Know About Guardians Of The Galaxy 3's Story

Since the story for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has long been decided, certain elements of it have already been confirmed. Gunn has shared that it will finish the original Guardians of the Galaxy line-up’s trilogy in the MCU, effectively making it his final film under Marvel Studios, at least for now. A big part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is likely to revolve around locating the alternate timeline Gamora (Zoe Saldana), whose whereabouts are currently unknown after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Rocket's (voiced by Bradley Cooper) mysterious origins story is also expected to be tackled. Meanwhile, as set up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Adam Warlock will be introduced in the MCU via the project. Finally, Gunn has confirmed that in light of its culminating nature, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will also see a major death or two.
