Footloose star Kevin Bacon has recently said he would love to join the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. A veteran of both film and television, Bacon’s prolific career first began with his appearance in 1978’s National Lampoon’s Animal House, and since then he has racked up more than 70 film and 24 television credits to his name. The sheer volume of Bacon’s on-screen appearances would eventually result in the creation of the tongue-in-cheek trivia game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” in which people would attempt to connect any other celebrity to the Hollywood actor in under six steps. The game became so popular, that at one point in 2012 Google briefly added the ability to search for a “Bacon Number” which was the measure of a celebrity’s proximity to Kevin Bacon.

Bacon’s status as a cult figure was further cemented into the contemporary pop culture landscape when James Gunn had Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord name drop him during 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Having been taken from Earth by Yondu at a young age, Peter Quill’s exposure to popular culture was understandably cut short, but aside from his beloved music collection, one other thing which stayed with him was the reverence he held for Bacon’s performance in Footloose. As a prelude to the film’s “dance-off to save the universe”, he had explained to Gamora about the legend of Kevin Bacon who taught an entire city of “people with sticks up their butts” about the power of dance. This joke would be referenced again in Avengers: Infinity War when Star-Lord asked Spider-Man if Footloose was “still the greatest movie in history”.

In a recent interview with Esquire, has suggested that should the opportunity ever arise for him to cameo in Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3, he would not hesitate, saying “Listen, I love the idea. I would love to be part of that.” He also went on to explain that when he first went to see the first Guardians film he was caught completely unawares. He said:

When I saw Guardians of the Galaxy, I went to see it having no idea that I was discussed... It was an afternoon in New York, I was on 67th Street and went by myself, as I often do... I was like, ‘Holy sh*t. They're talking about me. Are you guys getting this?’

Kevin Bacon in You Should Have Left

With production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to begin later this year, in anticipation of a May 5, 2023 release date, now would be the perfect time for James Gunn to reach out to Kevin Bacon. With Gunn’s trademark sense of humor deeply infused into the very fabric of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the opportunity to capitalize on one of its longest-running jokes would be far too good to miss. Whilst there are a plethora of characters Gunn could cast Bacon as, MCU fans would undoubtedly prefer just to have him play himself and watch as Pratt’s Star-Lord meets his childhood idol. After all, Gunn had already used another iconic ‘80s cameo appearance from David Hasselhoff in a similar capacity in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

At the moment, however, there is no word as to what Gunn has planned next for his eccentric group of intergalactic misfits. One thing that he has made clear, though, is that he is intending for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3to be his final entry in the franchise. In the meantime, Kevin Bacon fans should keep their fingers crossed that the legend of Footloose will make one last impact on the events in the film.
