Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gets a confident update from director and writer James Gunn. After working on DC Universe projects The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, Gunn is back with Marvel Studios to wrap up his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Originally Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was meant to be one of the first projects to release in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4, but it ended up being delayed to Gunn's firing and rehiring, not to mention the coronavirus pandemic. Now, however, it's locked for a May 2023 release date, with Gunn currently busy working on post-production.

Before Gunn's final MCU film before exclusively working on DCU as its co-CEO with Peter Safran, the actor is currently doing the press rounds for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special which is set to release on Disney+. This gives him the opportunity to offer an update about how work is going for his upcoming threequel. In a new interview with EW, Gunn offers reassurance about how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will satisfyingly wrap up the MCU sub-franchise. Read his full quote below:

It was really hard. This Christmas special was the easiest thing of all time. The movie was the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm starting to feel pretty good because I'm starting to see it come together. I'm starting to see how people react to it, and I'm seeing what works. Most of the work now is on VFX and dealing with the score with John Murphy, who did such a spectacular job with the holiday special. But I've started to feel pretty comfortable with it because I just want to honor these characters and honor the fans that have supported us this whole way.

Does This Mean The First GOTG Vol. 3 Trailer Is Coming Soon?

Guardians Of The Galaxy standing together

Before starting his exclusive work on DC, Gunn will be devoting the next few months to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Principal photography for the film has wrapped up for a while now, giving the filmmaker enough time to work on post-production. Given this, it's curious if Marvel Studios is already gearing up to release the first Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer. For context, Marvel Studios returned to Hall H in 2022 to lay out the rest of its Multiverse Saga plans. Gunn debuted the first official footage at the event, but it wasn't released online, which means that a promotional clip is all ready to be rolled out.

However, just because a trailer already exists, doesn't mean that Marvel Studios can just release it. There are a couple of other films ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the current MCU Phase 5 slate including The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+ and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. There are also upcoming MCU Disney+ shows on the franchise's docket. Given this, Disney and Marvel Studios need to be strategic with their campaign plans. Based on their promotional schedule before, it's possible that the first official trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won't release until the end of the year or early 2023.

In any case, Marvel Studios can get away with keeping Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's marketing period short. The cosmic team is already well-established in the franchise, which means that fans are already invested in their story. Realistically, its promotional campaign should be geared towards casual viewers who aren't knee-deep into MCU.
