While most of the MCU's eyes are currently looking at the likes of Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, director James Gunn is here to assure fans that he is hard at work on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Promising to round off the trilogy that he started in 2014, Gunn will be back for one more adventure with Star-Lord, Gamora, and the rest of the team. With this year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 once again lighting up the box office with its retro soundtrack, hopes are high that a third entry will follow suit. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may not arrive until 2020, but Gunn has given an update on where he is with the project.

Taking to Instagram, the director teased the status of Vol. 3 while taking a sip from a rather apt Groot mug. Interestingly, fans should note that he said he is currently polishing off the first draft of the script at around 70 pages:

Yes the bedhead is particularly out-of-control this morning, but I thought it was important to share my new #Groot mug with you. About to sit down with a cup of joe to work on - and almost finish - the first full draft of the #GuardiansoftheGalaxy Vol. 3 treatment - almost 70 pages. What are you guys up to? . #marvel #jamesgunn #writing #writinglife #screenwriting #gotg #gotgvol3 A post shared by James Gunn (@jamesgunn) on

It is expected that Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Zoe Saldana will all return for Vol 3., but it is unknown who else will be signing up for the team of space rogues this time around. Given that Pom Klementieff's Mantis became a fan-favorite following her arrival in Vol. 2, it is safe to assume that she will also be suiting up once more, but Gunn has remained tight-lipped on whether the "original" Guardians will be back for more. Sylvester Stallone memorably played Stakar Ogord, and alongside other famous faces like Michelle Yeoh, Ving Rhames, and even Miley Cyrus, the original lineup appeared in one of the movie's many post-credit scenes.

Also, with the Guardians playing a big part in the upcoming Infinity War and a presumed return for Avengers 4, who's to say that all our favorites will be making it out of the brush with Thanos in one piece? That being said, Gunn has already tipped Adam Warlock as the big bad of the Guardians' third trip around the cosmos, so audiences know a little of what to expect. With Warlock also being teased as the credits rolled, Gunn later confirmed that the artificially created man of perfection would star alongside Elizabeth Debicki's Ayesha, who will be back for more.

Launching into movies around the Guardians and a more cosmic version of the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is sure to be another light-hearted adventure with some rocking songs to accompany it, but can it follow in the footsteps of its predecessors? Whatever happens, Gunn has a big job on his shoulders and Guardians 3 aiming to set up the next decade of MCU movies and help kickstart Phase 4. Well, it is a pretty good job that the script is just about done then.
