James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script is confirmed to be used. One of the more shocking developments for the MCU this year has been what has happened to Guardians 3. Disney fired James Gunn as its director after old tweets of his resurfaced. The decision sent shockwaves through the fandom that resulted in cast members speaking out and rising support for Gunn. Disney has decided not to reverse course at this point, leaving the project without a director and in obviously worse shape.

Even though Gunn isn't coming back as the director, his script has been a different story. Gunn finished his script prior to being fired, which set up years of adventures and future MCU movies. While another director can come in to try and fill Gunn's shoes, changing the entire story is a task that appeared to be too difficult. It was reported that his script would mostly stay, but it has now been confirmed.

James Gunn's brother, Sean Gunn - who plays Kraglin and also does mo-cap work for Rocket on set - spoke to Tulsa World about his career, and they asked him about everything going on in the MCU. When it comes to Guardians 3's status, he provided an important update and one that should make fans of his brother's work very happy. He confirmed that Marvel is going to use James Gunn's script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

"I don’t really know yet what’s going on with ‘Guardians 3.’ I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Rocket and Star-Lord

This may have been reported prior as Marvel's thought process, but this is coming straight from the mouth of a Gunn. If anyone involved with the Guardians franchise from an acting stand point knows the true status of the film, it would be Sean - especially when it comes to if they're going to keep his brother's work.

Now, Guardians 3 still won't have James as the director, but having his script is a huge step to maintaining the franchise's DNA. Gunn is notorious for his in-depth screenplays, ones that for the Guardians films even include the Awesome Mix songs as well as where they should be played. It also guarantees that Gunn's larger plan for the franchise and these characters will be completed, even if he won't be the one to actually film the scenes.

This is good news for the third film, but it also may speak to the overall vision for Guardians 3. There's an obvious need for a new director, but if Marvel wants to stick incredibly close to James' vision, then it may not be that appealing of a job. A new director may just be asked to come in and mirror James' style instead of getting to do their own thing. They'll get none of the credit if it's good and all of the blame if it disappoints, so the opportunity may not be worth the lack of creative freedom for some. Ultimately, Marvel will get a new director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but they'll definitely be using James Gunn's script.
