Chris Pratt praises Disney's decision to rehire James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Since the obscure comic book property made the leap to blockbuster films, Gunn has been its primary creative force; not only did he co-write and direct the first two Guardians films, he aided his fellow Marvel filmmakers in ironing out the team's portrayal in Avengers: Infinity War. Considering how integral Gunn was to Guardians' success, many people were surprised when Disney fired him from the upcoming third film after old, insensitive tweets of Gunn's resurfaced.

For months, Marvel and Disney stood by the decision to move on, but most (including the principal Guardians cast) felt Gunn had been treated unfairly. Several of Gunn's contemporaries, including Edgar Wright and Taika Waititi, expressed reluctance to helm Guardians 3, feeling that franchise was Gunn's and Gunn's alone. Hence, there was cause for great celebration earlier this year when Gunn was rehired for the Guardians 3 job. And one can (unsurprisingly) add Pratt to the list of people who feel this was the right decision.

In an interview with People during this week's Avengers: Endgame premiere, Pratt was asked for his thoughts about Gunn returning. As fans could expect, he was very excited by the development:

"I was so thrilled, so excited. I think it’s the right move, I really stand behind it. I’m really proud of Disney for hiring James back and ultimately thrilled for not only us, but also for the fans. I think it’s going to wrap up the trilogy in the best way.”

During the time Gunn was no longer involved with Guardians 3, Marvel maintained they were still going to use his script. That put the studio in a precarious position where they would have needed to find a director that could accurately convey Gunn's sensibilities without coming across as a cheap imitation. There are a lot of ways where that could have gone horribly wrong, so it's arguably for the best Gunn is back to end his trilogy. Disney seemed to be aware of the inherent dangers of replacing Gunn, as they reportedly didn't even search for another filmmaker. Perhaps they were waiting until the controversy surrounding Gunn's tweets died down before making Gunn's return official.

As exciting it is Gunn's in the Marvel family again, it'll be some time before Guardians 3 actually comes into fruition. Gunn has another high-profile comic book gig on his plate, helming DC's The Suicide Squad. That film is already scheduled for a 2021 release, and Gunn is not going to rush it so he can run back to the MCU. This means Guardians 3 won't be ready until 2023 at the earliest, when Marvel is knee-deep into Phase 4. But fans might be willing to wait however long it takes since they know Gunn will be the one calling the shots.
