James Gunn teases the gigantic scale of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While all eyes are currently on Gunn’s upcoming DC film, The Suicide Squad, releasing in theaters and on HBO Max August 6, the director will be returning to Marvel to cap off the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, despite previously being sacked for controversial tweets that were unearthed. Gunn has reiterated numerous times this will be his final film in the series.

The threequel is scheduled for a debut on May 5, 2023, which is the second Marvel film lined up for that year after Ant-Man 3. With a release date still so far in the future, virtually nothing is known for sure about the film’s plot, other than what Gunn and the cast have teased in interviews and on social media. All the usual suspects will be returning for Vol. 3, including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Sean Gunn as Kraglin, all of which were confirmed by Gunn. It is also safe to assume Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel will return as the voices of Rocket and Groot.

Now, Gunn has yet another tease for fans eagerly awaiting his return to Marvel. In an interview with ComicBook, the director discussed the differences between working on DC’s Suicide Squad and the Guardians movies for the MCU, saying that the films force him to use different parts of his directorial repertoire. Gunn concluded his comments by saying the scale of Vol. 3 is "just gigantic.” Read his full quote below:

Listen, Guardians movies are just different. It's just using a different part of my brain in some ways. I mean, Guardians movies are more geometric. This Guardians, in particular, is just gigantic, so I'm just finishing the story that I feel like I need to finish.

The filmmaker once again demonstrates his knack for hyping up his upcoming projects without actually revealing any specific plot details. Gunn recently teased that Guardians 3 will also feature a heavier story to go along with its larger scale. It’s long been speculated that the film will focus more on Rocket’s traumatic origin story, which Gunn confirmed in this recent interview, saying that he feels an obligation to tell Rocket’s story in full.

The Guardians are set to play a role in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder before getting their own Holiday Special, which Gunn says will lead directly into Vol. 3. As this will act as Gunn’s final bow to the franchise, there is naturally a lot of pressure for the film to be bigger and better than what has come before it. The search for Gamora will likely be a central plotline, but other than that, only time will tell how gigantic Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be.
