Director James Gunn has revealed the last thing he filmed for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The first Guardians of the Galaxy premiered in 2014, with its sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, following in 2017. Five years later, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has not yet premiered, but it is starting to gear up for its 2023 release. Its original release date was to be May 2020, but the production was plagued with multiple delays, including Gunn's temporary firing from Disney and the covid-19 pandemic.

After these delays, it was particularly exciting to hear that filming officially began in November 2021. Now, the cast and crew has confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has wrapped filming, as well. Plot details have been kept strictly under wraps, but it was revealed that Will Poulter will appear in the film as Adam Warlock. It is suspected that his character will be more villainous in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 than his comic book counterpart and will be seeking revenge on the Guardians. Besides Poulter, the sequel will also see the return of Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldaña (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), and Bradley Cooper (Rocket).

Gunn took to Twitter to reveal the very last thing that he filmed for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. In the post, he shared a picture of the slate that his camera crew made for him on the final day of filming. He indicated the final thing he filmed was a simple shot of Rocket seated. He appears first with Sean Gunn, then in the next shot, nothing is there. Gunn also revealed he almost started sobbing as he filmed the scene, as Guardians of the Galaxy 3 marks his last project with the Guardians. Check out his post below:

The post is more of a testament to Gunn's immense passion for Guardians of the Galaxy, than it is a hint at the film's content. After all, it is almost impossible to make any deductions based on that very simple scene description. Sean, while appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy as both Kraglin and as Rocket for motion capture work, likely was standing in as Rocket in this particular scene. With all that in mind, there is also no telling where this shot could go in the film. Movies are often filmed out of order, so this shot Gunn is describing is likely not the final scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Unfortunately, it will be another year before the film releases and shines a light on this final shot described by Gunn. All that is really known for sure is that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is bound to be an emotional one. Gunn has confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is the last in his series. This doesn't mean that the Guardians won't appear elsewhere in the MCU, but it won't be under Gunn's direction if they do. It remains to be seen if Marvel will order a fourth film under a different director or if the Guardians won't be seen altogether in their own film again. For now, Gunn continues to highlight the strong emotions of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and his passion for bringing his final Guardians film to the big screen.
