Adam McKay was approached to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios. Ever since James Gunn was fired from the project, Disney has been looking to find a director to replace him, but have come up empty handed thus far. Gunn has widely been credited for the success of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, but won't get a shot at the third movie.

Because of Gunn's influence on the tone of the films, fans of the series were upset to find out that he would no longer be associated with Marvel due to old offensive Tweets that had surfaced. Since his firing, fans and coworkers have been advocating for Disney to rehire Gunn, but the House of Mouse won't budge on their decision. Over 420,000 Marvel fans signed a petition for Disney to rehire Gunn, and the Guardians of the Galaxy cast even signed an open letter in full support of Gunn. Despite Gunn's fans and coworkers' valiant efforts, Disney and Marvel Studios are still looking for a new director.

Recently speaking on the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcastdirector McKay revealed that he had been considered to helm the next Guardians of the Galaxy installment. McKay also revealed that Kevin Feige had talked with him about directing Inhumans saying, "We've talked a little bit. Yeah. We were kicking around the idea of the Inhumans at one point. We're always kind of talking. I think Feige is just the greatest and what they're doing is amazing." While McKay said he was approached for both films, he didn't confirm or deny whether he would be working on either project.

For the longest time, McKay was mainly known as a comedy director, directing films such as the two Anchorman movies, Step Brothers, and The Other Guys. In recent years, McKay has moved on to more serious projects such as The Big Short in 2015, for which he and Charles Randolph won an Oscar for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay. McKay is also directing the upcoming film Vicewhich is the story of Dick Cheney coming to power under George W. Bush.

Even though not everyone is a fan of McKay's choice of comedy, he's proven he has what it takes to direct both comedies and more serious films. Many people wouldn't be happy if McKay was chosen to replace Gunn, but with that in mind, no matter who Disney chooses, people are going to be upset because it isn't Gunn. While it is incredibly unlikely that Disney will rehire Gunn at this point, they may still be using Gunn's script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With that in mind, the film really can't develop much more until a director is found.
