Writer/director James Gunn reveals he is reuniting with The Suicide Squad composer John Murphy for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise has been in the works for the past five years, with Gunn beginning development on it ahead of the release of 2016's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 though taking a break after being let go by Marvel and Disney in 2018. Gunn would use this time to instead team with Warner Bros. and DC Films for the DC Extended Universe sequel The Suicide Squad.

Hitting theaters and HBO Max in August, The Suicide Squad would underperform at the pandemic-addled box office but would become a streaming hit and score largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Initially planning to return to the MCU following production on the DCEU film, Gunn would instead utilize his scheduled break between the two films to write, create and primarily direct the HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker, which is currently set for a January 2022 debut. Gunn is now gearing up to begin filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and has now revealed an exciting new detail for the film.

In anticipation of the home media release for The Suicide Squad, Gunn caught up with CinemaBlend to also discuss Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While discussing his busy schedule getting ready for production on the film, Gunn let it slip that Murphy will be composing the score for the MCU threequel, replacing Tyler Bates from the first two films. See what Gunn said below:

"I had to get off of a zoom right before this zoom because I was talking to all of my heads of department. We were going through the finale of the film from shot to shot, to shot, to shot and explaining exactly how each shot was going to be done. Now, this stuff we're going to shoot in May. So this is about just planning. After I get off of this, I'm going to have to go listen to some music that John Murphy wrote that we're going to be playing during the movie. … I guess I'm spoiling the fact that John Murphy is doing the score for Guardians. So you guys got a scoop."

Gunn's reunion with Murphy for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks an interesting full circle partnership for the duo following The Suicide Squad. The DCEU film marked both Gunn and Murphy's debut in the WB franchise while the MCU threequel will mark the latter's first outing in the Disney-owned franchise. While Gunn's films may be better known for their soundtracks full of classic tracks chosen by the filmmaker, the score of The Suicide Squad proved just as effective as the licensed tracks utilized.

In addition to Gunn's confirmation of Murphy's involvement in the film, it's interesting to note his expansion on the production schedule for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film is expected to begin shooting in November, with Gunn also having confirmed as such with the casting announcement of Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, but his note of running through at least May points towards a longer shooting schedule than its predecessors, creating a point of curiosity regarding the film's scope. Only time will tell when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
