Director James Gunn has confirmed that filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has officially commenced with a fun on-set photo that includes newcomer Will Poulter. Gunn has had an incredibly successful year so far following the release of his DC Extended Universe debut The Suicide Squadwhich opened to rave reviews when it was released earlier this year. Gunn became a household name following the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. back in 2014 and was snapped up by DC in 2018 to head the sequel to/reboot of David Ayer's Suicide Squad

Gunn directed the previous two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and has been teasing the pre-production stages of Volume 3 over the last few months. The film's production had already been subject to a number of delays due to Gunn's firing and subsequent re-hiring by Disney. After a series of MCU release dates were pushed back last month, many fans were concerned that they would have to wait even longer for the release of this third installment. However, recently Gunn took to Twitter to confirm that GOTG3 would not be affected by the date changes and that they were ready to go, and now it seems as though that day has finally arrived.

Now, Gunn has shared a sweet polaroid of the cast on the first day of shooting for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director referenced the "challenging journey" it's taken to get to this point, before reiterating how "blissful" it is to be back on set. The photo shows Gunn posing alongside his Guardians cast that includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn, as well as Marvel newcomers Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji. Poulter's presence in the image will certainly be exciting for many after it was recently confirmed that the Midsommar star had been cast as Adam Warlock, after a supposedly lengthy search to fill the role. Plot details for GOTG3 (as with any Marvel film) have been kept largely under wraps so far. The last time audiences saw the Guardians they were traveling with Thor, and since Phase 4 of the MCU will see Thor: Love and Thunder release before this newest Guardians installment, it truly is anyone's guess as to how the events of GOTG3 could unfold.

Gunn's confirmation that filming has finally commenced is likely to be a welcomed relief for many who were concerned about the delays that the film's production has experienced thus far. While this new image doesn't offer much in the way of easter eggs or clues (something that Gunn is incredibly fond of sharing), it's certainly exciting to see Poulter alongside the main cast who are finally back together after such a long time. The previous Guardians movie was released back in 2017 and with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 not set for release until mid-2023, audiences still have a while to go until everyone's favorite group of space-dwelling misfits are back on the big screen.
