Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Will Poulter teases the physical transformation he underwent to become Adam Warlock. After finding success with 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/ director James Gunn returned in 2017 with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a bigger and bolder sequel, which was a big box office hit, earning over $863 million. Although Gunn has been busy with other superhero projects, such as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, the director is currently in the midst of shooting the third film in his MCU trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Along with the regular crew of heroes, including Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña's Gamora, Dave Bautista's Drax, Vin Diesel's Groot, Bradley Cooper's Rocket, and Karen Gillan's Nebula, it was announced last year that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would feature Poulter and Adam Warlock. The announcement didn't come as a surprise for many fans, however, with the post-credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 having featured Elizabeth Debicki's Ayesha overseeing the creation of a powerful being she dubs "Adam".

In a new interview with The Independent, Poulter explains that taking on the role of Warlock involved a substantial physical transformation. The actor reveals that the role has required a great deal of training and a carefully regimented diet, all of which is paid for by Marvel. Poulter teases that he's been forced to eat more than he's wanted to but also that there have been other times when he's not been able to get as much food as he's wanted. Check out Poulter's full comment below:

“It’s been a lot of gym work and a very, very specific diet. It means not particularly civilized at times. Quantities of food you wouldn’t necessarily want to ingest. And other times not enough food. I’ve gone through a series of different diets over the last few months. Now I’m in a maintenance phase, which is quite nice. I’m not eating copious amounts of food to bulk, and I’m not cutting. I’m just maintaining my weight. I’ve gone through periods of looking at food and feeling like I can’t face it, and then you blink and the next minute you’re ready to eat furniture because you’re so hungry.”

While Poulter's regimen sounds strict, the actor stresses that, to Marvel, his mental and physical health has always been "number one." The actor doesn't describe exactly what audiences can expect from his appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but it certainly sounds like fans will get to experience a significantly bulked-up and muscled version of Adam Warlock, not unlike the character's impressive physique in the comics. One thing Poulter does say, however, is that he "wouldn't recommend anyone do what [he] did to get ready" for a job.

Poulter joins a host of other well-respected actors who have pushed their bodies to the limits for a role in a film. Christian Bale is famous for the physical transformations he undertakes for various roles, even going so far as to lose a record-breaking 63 pounds for The Machinist, which would seem even more drastic an approach than what Poulter is experiencing. Even within the Guardians of the Galaxy cast itself, Pratt underwent a similar physical transformation, shedding weight and boasting a highly toned physique by the end of his training. It remains to be seen what Poulter's Adam Warlock will look like in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but it would seem like audiences might be in for a comics-accurate depiction of the iconic character.
