James Gunn, writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has posted the film's script online. Fans can now check out the foundation of the blockbuster — free of charge — and see what made it into the movie as well as what ended up on the cutting room floor.

Those who watched Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel, and wondered about the action behind the scenes, are in luck. Because now, by both uploading the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 script online and answering common questions about the movie's production, Gunn has provided a fresh look into how the films came to be.

In a Facebook post, Gunn shared the movie's script, "as promised." And in a Twitter thread, the writer/director provided details about his process of creating the script and translating it into the film. Among the interesting tidbits is the fact that higher-ups didn't request any changes to the script to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 gel more cohesively with upcoming Avengers movies. Gunn said that he did, however, send the script to the writers and directors behind Avengers: Infinity War, so that they could know the fate of the Guardians while writing.

12 And despite so many people thinking Adam will show up in Vol 3 that is something that we have never confirmed. Who knows how long it will take him to bake in that cocoon. That said, I love Adam. But the time must be right.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) November 21, 2017

What's more, it turns out that the brief glimpse of Adam Warlock's cocoon almost didn't make it into Guardians 2. There's still no firm word on whether or not Warlock will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and Gunn's Twitter thread does little to encourage optimism.

Guardians 2 was a successful undertaking for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: It grossed more than $863 million worldwide, and ended up with a respectable 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Further, it became another beloved entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, delivering a fun entry for fans in the expansive universe and a return trip to the space-traveling team. Gunn will return to write and direct the forthcoming third entry in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, which is expected to release in 2020.

Gunn has done admirable work on the Guardians films, so it's fun to get an insider's perspective into his creative process. And with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 still years away, picking apart the Guardians 2 script will have to do, for now. At the very least, there's a silver lining wrapped up in the long wait for the third entry in the series: Gunn has plenty of time to settle on a perfect playlist for the movie.
