Here's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2's opening monster battle with the Abilisk explained. Guardians Of The Galaxy was a somewhat obscure comic series before it was turned into a 2014 MCU blockbuster of the same name. The movie follows the formation of the titular team of intergalactic misfits, with director James Gunn infusing it with a surprising amount of heart and humor. The movie also made stars out of Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista, and the team is now a beloved part of the MCU.

Gunn and his cast later returned for 2017's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, which saw Pratt's Star-Lord finally meeting his father Ego, played by Kurt Russell. That said, it's not a family reunion that ends well. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 was another success - with Gunn also succeeding in putting together another killer mixtape - but the reviews weren't as warm. The crew will next be a part of Thor: Love And Thunder, before returning for Gunn's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. The third movie is also being teased as the potential last entry with the current version of the team.

Given that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 sees the team fighting a literal planet and the Sovereign, the opening monster The Abilisk may almost seem easy in comparison. That's not really the case, as this tentacled nightmare is a large, inter-dimensional beast that was eating the batteries of the Sovereign. They, in turn, hired the Guardians to kill it, but despite luring it into a trap, it proved nearly impossible to destroy as its skin was resistant to their various blasters and weapons.

Drax (Bautista) even tried an unconventional approach by allowing himself to be swallowed by The Abilisk and attempting to stab it to death from the inside. This Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 setpiece sees the crew struggle to avoid being crushed by its many tentacles or just plain eaten. Luckily, Gamora eventually spots a small, pre-made slash in its skin and proceeds to leap at it with her sword and essentially gut the monster. This has the dual effect of both slaying The Abilisk and freeing Drax from its stomach.

It's a short but intense battle that was a fun way to open up Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. It also had the added advantage of returning James Gunn somewhat to his horror roots, and it wouldn't be hard to imagine The Abilisk having encountered the Long One alien parasite from his 2006 directorial debut Slither.
