Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 concept artist Ryan Lang reveals new Howard the Duck design. Marvel Studios kicked off the 2017 summer movie season with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 back in early May. And in just a few weeks, the sequel has made over $659 million worldwide, becoming the second-highest grossing movie of the year after Beauty and the Beast. Fans and critics alike have praised the film's action-packed plot, dazzling visuals, witty banter and fun-loving adventure.

Writer-director James Gunn sure knows how to spin an entertaining tale, but he also fills his movies with lots of nods to the original series and other comics. For instance, not only did the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie have quite a few noteworthy cameos from stars like Rob Zombie, Josh Brolin, Nathan Fillion, Alexis Denisof and Stan Lee, but there was also an appearance from Howard the Duck (voiced by Seth Green) after the credits. The character, who hasn't been seen on the big screen since his own universally panned 1986 movie, shows up in a last minute scene as a prisoner and companion to Benicio del Toro's The Collector.

To bring the character to the screen, the movie's conceptual artist Ryan Lang (who also worked on Doctor Strange) had to take the character we love from the comics to the screen, and he did so in style. Lang has released one of his concepts of Howard wearing the character's iconic red suit, which you can see below:

Now there have been murmurs that a new Howard the Duck movie could happen sometime in the future, but Marvel president Kevin Feige says there aren't any concrete plans at this time. Still, that won't stop him from showing up in another MCU film, like he did in this year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This time around that illustrious duck (again voiced by Green) managed to make it into the movie itself, having a drink in the Iron Lotus on Contraxia with his date and flirting by saying, "You're out of luck until you've got duck."

Howard seems to have cleaned up nicely since his last appearance in Guardians Vol. 1, when he'd just been through an explosion and showed up all dirty and grungy. In this concept art and in Guardians Vol. 2, he's back to his sassy and spiffy self, seemingly having gone his own way after leaving The Collector. Other than that, not much has changed between this illustration and the character that appeared in both Guardians movies. Lang, however, has said this is just one piece of concept art of Howard the Duck, so who is to say there aren't more versions of the character out there that didn't make it to the big screen.
