Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn reveals that one important fight scene was inspired by 2015's Furious 7. Apart from both containing Vin Diesel, you might struggle to pull many similarities between the Fast and the Furious series and James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. While both contain wild characters and even wilder stunts, they are both galaxies away from each other in genre and storyline. However, Gunn claims that one of the biggest fight scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was inspired by one of the most outrageous Furious 7 scenes.
The scene in question sees Zoe Saldana's Gamora hunted down by her adoptive sister Nebula - played by Karen Gillan. As a vengeful Nebula hunts down the green-skinned Gamora, her gunship takes a tumble inside a cavern below Ego's living planet. Gunn says that the scene was one of the most important for the relationship of the sisters and it was also a rare incident where he imagined the action before any of the dialogue.
Speaking to The New York Times during the "Anatomy of a Scene" segment, Gunn narrates the fight with his thought process and reveals how Furious 7 inspired Gamora's gravity-defying strength. You may remember that we see her lift a giant blaster gun from Nebula's fallen craft and open fire on her cyborg sister. Although it may not be an easy comparison to spot at first, on a second watch you can definitely see the homage to James Wan's Furious 7 after Gunn's comments. The director said that he was keen to emulate one of the Fast franchise's many ludicrous stunts in his own Guardians way:
"Gamora picks up a giant gun which is the blaster which has fallen off the M-ship that Nebula is driving. And I thought that was just a fun way to take things up to the next level. I had seen The Rock do his thing with a giant blaster in Fast and Furious 7 and I decided to one-up that with Zoe Saldana grabbing a gun that's eight times bigger than The Rock's gun in Fast and Furious."
If you remember back to 2015's Fast film, it looked like curtains for our favorites when pinned down by a helicopter attack from Djimon Hounsou's Jakande. It was anything but "adios Toretto," as a last minute rescue from Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs saw The Rock lifting more ridiculously sized objects and wielding a minigun like a human Hercules.
If one nod to other films isn't enough, elsewhere Gunn says that the warring sisters took influence from Spy vs. Spy and the infamous "crop duster" scene from Alfred Hitchcock's North By Northwest.
The sisters going to war may have been one of the least Guardians-esque Guardians scenes and was missing the usual disco soundtrack, however, seeing Nebula and Gamora finally lock horns after two movies was a superb mid-film boost to the action.
With Nebula and Gamora seemingly mellowed since their introductions in 2014's first film, it looks like the future of the sisters will involve Nebula's quest to exact revenge on Thanos (Josh Brolin). With both actresses confirmed to return for Avengers: Infinity War and Gamora promised an even bigger role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, have the children of Thanos finally buried the hatchet for good?
