Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn has had a big week, as he was finally able to share and discuss the newest trailer for the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The Guardians 2 trailer, which Gunn confirmed is the final one for the sequel, showcased everyone from the main cast. Their chemistry together, which was one of the biggest reasons that the Guardians franchise got off to such a rousing start three years ago, looks to be as strong as ever.

Gunn is far from finished promoting the film and having fun with his followers on the director’s social media pages, where he has become a powerhouse of content in recent years. In between photos of his cat and dog, his Instagram account often gives glimpses inside the making of upcoming projects like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He’s also gotten cast members involved in his antics at times, and his newest photos do just that - with the help of some unique-looking emojis.

Two new photos posted to Gunn’s Instagram account on Wednesday show four people hiding their faces with giant cardboard heads made to resemble emojis of popular Guardians of the Galaxy characters. Three of them are fairly obvious for Guardians of the Galaxy fans: Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and Yondu (Michael Rooker) complete with his new fin. But what about the regular-looking guy on the far left? It’s Gunn himself, of course.

The second photo reveals that it was indeed Gunn, Rooker, Saldana, and Pratt hiding behind the emoji heads. Also lurking in the back of the photo is an Easter egg of an emoji in the character Mantis, who will be introduced in Guardians 2 played by Pom Klementieff. The Star-Lord and Gamora emoji heads, in particular, closely resemble actual emojis that pop up when you tweet the appropriate hashtags.

It’s nice to see that the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is having as much fun promoting the movie as the director. Rooker and Saldana look like they could barely contain their laughter as they took the photos with Gunn and Pratt, who did their best to remain stoic. Gunn hasn’t hesitated to share other behind-the-scenes photos with the cast, and even some of the sequel’s guest actors, like Rob Zombie.

Gunn has done a great job giving fans an inside look at the making of his films, especially lately with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, he’s constantly at risk of oversharing. At the end of the day, no amount of social media mischief could make up for a letdown of a sequel. But there’s little reason to bet against Gunn right now - and if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is as fun as it looks from Gunn’s social media posts, fans could be in for another thrilling experience.
