Update: Exclusive full interview with James Gunn on Marvel movies in 4DX

Fans now have a new dimension in which to experience Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with help from director James Gunn. After a massive international opening last weekend, Guardians 2 will be hitting screens stateside this evening before its proper debut tomorrow. Thanks to the colossal success of the first film and plenty of early buzz, Guardians 2 is currently on track to open at home this weekend to over $150 million. And even before the receipts have been counted, Marvel are so confident in the film's success that they've already green-lit Guardians 3, with Gunn returning to write and direct.

All throughout the process of making and releasing the sequel, Gunn has been very involved. He not only crafted the film itself, but establishes its soundtrack too. He also does his best to oversee trailers and promotional material, ensuring a certain tone is maintained and footage not in the final film is used for marketing whenever possible. Gunn's also been adament about the quality of Guardians 2 itself. He has expressed his desire for Marvel to start releasing 4K versions of their films for home video. He's also used his Twitter to urge fans to see Guardians 2 in 4K or IMAX 3D when possible, as he's overseen the production of these versions of the film as well. Now, he's adding a new dimension to the viewing experience.

Gunn has teamed up with CJ 4DPLEX to help craft the 4DX versions of Guardians 2 that have all ready begun rolling out globally. All told, the 4DX version of the movie will be available in 47 countries, as new theaters supporting the format are popping up weekly. A video of Gunn introducing the format has even shown up on YouTube, which you can check out below:

Marvel Studios is no stranger to the premium format, as they've released both Avengers films in 4DX along with Iron Man 3. Along with the visual and audio components of the film, 4DX is known for adding rumble seats, smells, and even fog and light to augment the film experience. While it may seem like an expensive gimmick to some, Gunn's involvement ensures that the 4DX experience for Guardians 2 will remain true to his vision:

“We've crafted something marvelous for 4DX theatres all over the world. I think it's one of the best ways you can possibly see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."

Along with the statement by Gunn and the announcement by CJ 4DPLEX, the CEO of the theater company, Byung Hwan Choi, had this to say about the collaboration.

“Superhero films maximize the abilities of 4DX’s immersive motion technology and we're excited for fans to have the opportunity to view the film in a format that transcends the traditional theatre viewing experience. We're also very confident that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will follow in the footsteps of previously successful Marvel Super Hero films in 4DX."

For casual fans, the 4DX announcement won't mean much, but for diehards it'll mean another way to experience the film—and shell out plenty of money to Marvel. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 3D, 4K, and now 4DX, there's no shortage of ways to experience Marvel's latest cosmic romp.
