Marvel Comics' Age of Space is almost here, featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy in a new era as they leave their outlaw careers behind for something much bigger. The Guardians will soon become deputized by the Galactic Council, serving as the protectors of space in a more official capacity than they ever have before. This also means that the team will be expanding in size, seeing brand new (and surprising) faces joining their ranks when Guardians of the Galaxy #13 releases this April. To further build on the excitement, Marvel Comics has released a new trailer for the event, as well as preview pages for the first issue of what will be brand new cosmic era for the Marvel Universe.

Marvel's new Age of Space will be coming from the mind of Al Ewing, who has slowly been evolving the Guardians into something new for a while now (particularly with Star-Lord). Joined by artist Juan Frigeri, Ewing is looking to officially make the Guardians the Avengers of Marvel's cosmic regions. It seems they'll be sanctioned by the Galactic Council to be an official team of heroes, rather than the well-intentioned outlaws they've long been in the Marvel Universe's past. Complete with new uniforms and a bigger team that's already been teased, the Guardians will soon be ready to face even bigger threats and dangers than ever before. Heroes such as Wiccan and Emperor Hulking will be joining the team, along with more surprising additions such as the original Quasar and Doctor Doom himself.

In an interview with CBR, Ewing shared that this new era for the Guardians felt like a natural progression for the team: “It's a way to change things up a little, to raise the stakes and the tension, and partly it's a way to play off S.W.O.R.D. -- the Space Avengers to counter the Space X-Men."

Ewing is also writing the mentioned S.W.O.R.D series, which has seen Abigail Brand and several mutants from the nation of Krakoa working together to form the latest iteration of the space defense program. Between that and this new status quo change for the Guardians of the Galaxy, it's pretty evident that Ewing is now firmly positioned as the visionary head of Marvel's cosmic regions, just as writer Jonathan Hickman is Marvel's Head of X, guiding the course of their X-Men titles. In any case, it's going to be really exciting to see the Guardians of the Galaxy transition from outlaws to full-blown superheroes in the coming issues from Marvel Comics.
