In an unexpected twist, Grand Theft Auto Online players have discovered an easter egg linking the new Cayo Perico Heist to Red Dead Redemption 2While this is certainly not the first time Rockstar Games has inserted an easter egg from one of its popular games into another, this is just the latest example that appears to indicate that Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption may exist in the same universe. Many are beginning to believe this is the case.

The Cayo Perico Update launched four days ago, bringing new content and most importantly, a new Heist and an all-new way to complete it, as players can either run the Heist solo or with a group. Cayo Perico is a tropical island owned by El Rubio, the target of players' latest and greatest scam. The update introduces new locations, characters, even new radio stations, something usually reserved for entirely new Grand Theft Auto entries. Cayo Perico represents the largest update in Grand Theft Auto Online history.

According to eagle-eyed observer happygrowls on Twitter, some players have noticed a black-and-white photo in of a familiar-looking family in El Rubio's mansion. Interestingly, the people depicted in the picture look identical to the family of German immigrants that players have the opportunity to save when playing as Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2. This finding is prompting fans to seriously question if El Rubio, also known as Juan Strickler, is descended from this exact German family. At one point during the heist, El Rubio makes a reference to his "Opa", which means "grandfather" in German.

The sprawling Wild West setting of Red Dead Red Redemption 2 offers no shortage of easter eggs and secrets hidden throughout the map. Although saving the family of German immigrants in Red Dead Redemption 2 does not change the course of the game, this finding adds to the growing evidence that there might be a stronger connection between the two acclaimed Rockstar titles. While it could just be an innocent and humorous reuse of assets from Rockstar's latest sandbox blockbuster, it's also increasingly looking as though the Red Dead Redemption series takes place within the Grand Theft Auto franchise's distant past.

Of course, Rockstar has never publicly admitted if this conclusion is true, so there is no way to completely confirm the purpose of this or past easter eggs. Rockstar has a tendency to shroud its games in mystery and tease fans, so it is very unlikely that it will ever verify if the two popular series share more in common than mechanics any time soon.
