Recent job listings from Rockstar hint that Grand Theft Auto 6 might not take place in the 1980s, as a popular fan theory suggests. Many fans of Grand Theft Auto are wondering when the next installment of the series will be released, and others are trying to pinpoint when Grand Theft Auto 6 will take place. Along with creating dream protagonists, fans have begun to speculate on the world they will be playing in when GTA 6 finally comes out. The idea that the game will take place in the past, during the 1980s, has been a popular one for some time.

There are plenty of theories surrounding GTA 6 and all that it will encompass when it finally arrives. GTA 5 came out over seven years ago, and if Rockstar’s announcements and comments are any indication, gamers shouldn’t expect GTA 6 until at least 2025. With over a decade of time between the two, players are expecting a lot. One theory purports that GTA 6 will feature a massive Project Americas map, with multiple cities to conduct high-speed chases in. Theories have also suggested that the setting of the game will be in the 1980s, but that theory may have just been debunked.

In a tweet by GTA 6 News, a new theory is put forward which, if true, would debunk the 1980s setting rumor, due to recent job postings on the Rockstar website. One job posting in India is looking for a Mixed Media Animator, who will create content for in-game media and work on multiple platforms. While not indicated in the job posting, if this position is for work on GTA 6, the theory of a 1980s setting could be completely debunked.

GTA 6  theories are a part of the Grand Theft Auto culture, and rumors are often ignited from clues both big and small. It’s fun to speculate on upcoming games and release dates, but when they’re wrong, players have to accept it. The theory that the setting will be in the 1980s could easily be proven wrong by these job postings, if the position is indeed for work on GTA 6. This is because many fans believe the in-game media mentioned in the job posting is related to Life Invader, a social media platform within the GTA game world. When the job posting indicated work on the creation of content for in-game media, it could mean content within the Life Invader application. If so, the setting would have to be after 2010, which was when Life Invader was created and eventually rose to popularity.

This revelation doesn’t debunk all rumors and theories regarding GTA 6, such as the one that suggests that the game will have a multi-city setting, but it does begin to shed light on some possibilities while limiting or debunking others. Still, while the job postings definitely indicate work on future projects, this doesn’t mean that the postings are for GTA 6. Instead, it could pertain to future GTA Online updates or to a separate IP altogether.
