A new piece of minimalist Grand Theft Auto VI fan art taking inspiration from the iconic Scarface film has recently appeared online. This is just one of many instances of fan art based upon Grand Theft Auto. The iconic and long-running open-world crime franchise has inspired other popular works including things like sketches, sculptures, and 3D art.
The Grand Theft Auto series is known to have been influenced by classic pieces of cinema and pop culture. 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, for instance, took clear fashion and tonal queues from 1990s west-coast gangster culture and comedies like Friday. Each game takes place in a different era and, for the most part, a different part of Rockstar's satirical version of the US. So, for the 1980s-based Vice City-- which was set in the neon-drenched tropical setting of Florida-- it is unsurprising that comparisons have been made to Brian De Palma's 1983 classic film Scarface. While Tommy Vercetti's story in Vice City is much more comedic and irreverent than Tony Montana's in Scarface, the game's aesthetic, gratuitous violence, and heavy focus on drug peddling certainly draw parallels to De Palma's crime film.
A Redditor going by the handle Gr0777 has seized upon these similarities and created a simple yet effective logo inspired by both GTA: Vice City and Scarface. The logo, which is a mock-up of a logo for the (hopefully) upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, pays slight homage to the logo for Vice City while making use of the iconic, striking black-and-white style used in so many Scarface posters. Specifically, the title "Grand Theft Auto" is presented in a style similar to Vice City, with the Scarface aesthetic applied to the "VI" subtitle.
It has long been assumed by many portions of the GTA fanbase that the next entry will see Grand Theft Auto return to Vice City. This assumption has come about for a handful of reasons, chief among them being the fact that Vice City is the only major city in the Grand Theft Auto universe that has yet to be featured in HD (controversial remakes notwithstanding). Additionally, GTA V, the most recent release in the series, took players back to Los Santos, so some believe that Rockstar will be attempting to modernize Vice City in a similar way.
So little is known about GTA VI, so it is likely that fan speculation will continue to run wild for some time. This bit of fan art certainly doubles down on the theory that GTA VI will take place in Vice City, but the upcoming game could be set in a new location entirely; parodies of cities like Chicago, Boston, Detroit, and Atlanta have yet to be featured in the franchise and would arguably be great picks for the series. Whatever the case, hopefully Grand Theft Auto fans are not left disappointed when the next location is unveiled.
