Grand Theft Auto 6 has long been rumored to be a generational leap in Rockstar Games' open-world resume. Years of online chatter have suggested that the eventual release might take players back to Vice City, but the company has yet to anything about where its next debaucherous criminal adventure could take place. Recently, a new rumor claiming to shed light on GTA 6's release date also included unconfirmed details about the upcoming game's location - one which would be the most ambitious sandbox title ever to be released, if they prove accurate.

There's no concrete information regarding when or where GTA 6 could take place at the moment. Still, the 2019 "Project Americas" rumors that went viral and ignited years of speculation were responsible for nearly all of the theories claiming GTA 6 will be set in Vice City. Now, an alleged Rockstar insider has come out of the woodwork claiming that these long-circulated rumors are true.

This information stems from the anonymous message board 4chan, where it was posted on March 29 and spread to other forums like Imgur and Reddit. The poster attempts to add credibility to his statements by claiming he has worked with Rockstar in a "coordinating capacity" but doesn't provide any way to verify their employment history. Similar to the Project Americas rumors, the poster claimed that GTA 6 would take place in several cities, and they alleged to reveal how many areas to expect.

GTA 6 could allegedly place in "a total of 5 contiguous 'cities' across 5 states," which will supposedly include Liberty City and a sixth metropolis that isn't adjacent to the others. The original Project Americas post claimed that the game would be set in Rockstar's fictional rendition of the United States and Latin America or the Caribbean, which could be the mysterious sixth city mentioned in this latest rumor. Plus, even with all of these new potential locations, fans might not need to say goodbye to GTA 5's Los Santos.

The post goes on to claim that GTA 5's "current map is included in this new world (expanded and enhanced)." That suggests that Los Santos could be included in one of the five cities mentioned in the post and aligns with Rockstar's plans for GTA Online. The online mode of GTA 5 has proven to be a cash cow for the company, and it will be ported to next-generation consoles, which signals that Rockstar has no intent to replace it any time soon. Adding new cities to GTA Online and selling a single-player campaign as a standalone title could allow the company to retain its massive player base and introduce new content.

Rockstar has reportedly looked into devising alternative ways to release its title to reduce the crunch required of its developers. The company has been considering piecemeal launches of big games, like how World of Warcraft expansions are released biennially, to give staffers more manageable deadlines than one massive one years down the line. This leak is completely unconfirmed, so the future is still murky for Grand Theft Auto 6, but the release strategy it described might not be so far-fetched after all.
