Rumors suggest that Grand Theft Auto 6 will take inspiration from notorious bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde, which may reveal a great deal about the game's story and themes. The last entry in Rockstar Games' open-world crime franchise, Grand Theft Auto 5, launched way back in 2013. Since then fans have been eagerly awaiting the series' next entry, though actual official information has been scarce. A recent report from Bloomberg points towards a female protagonist for Grand Theft Auto 6, with the game allegedly being based on the exploits of Bonnie and Clyde.

Various rumors about Grand Theft Auto 6 have swirled in recent years, but Bloomberg's report seems to be particularly credible. Industry insider Jason Schreier claims that the game will take place in a fictional city based on Miami, Florida, which is likely to be the beloved Vice City. The beach city first appeared in 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and many fans are eager to return to the gorgeous vacation destination. Schreier also claims that there will be two playable protagonists in GTA 6, a crime duo made up of a Latina woman and her male counterpart. These two GTA 6 characters will apparently be based on Bonnie and Clyde, making the game a love letter to the American crime icons.

Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow were an American couple who traveled the Central United States and pulled off robberies during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Traveling with a gang of other outlaws, the couple terrorized the US for years before being killed in an ambush by lawmen. Bonnie and Clyde mainly robbed stores and funeral homes, but they are most well-known for their occasional bank robberies. The two have been depicted and romanticized in various films and television series, most notably the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as the lovely couple.

GTA 6 Can Serve As A Modern Adaptation Of Bonnie and Clyde

While the female protagonist of GTA 6 indicated by Bloomberg already sets it apart from past entries in the series, taking inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde can make for a truly unique experience. The concept suggests that there will be a romantic link between the game's two playable characters, which would make for a much different dynamic than the ones found in GTA 5. This claim also suggests that bank robberies may be a huge element of GTA 6, perhaps taking the place of the dynamic heists found in the last game. Like 1967's Bonnie and Clyde the game will likely romanticize the outlaws for embracing freedom, though their crime spree could also end in a dramatic bloodbath too.

While the release date of GTA 6 is currently unconfirmed, Jason Schereir's claims point to Bonnie and Clyde as a major influence on the project. Having just two playable characters could make the game more focused than GTA 5, and their relationship should add some exciting drama to the experience. Bank robberies may also be a focus in Grand Theft Auto 6, unlike past entries, and the glorification of the protagonist duo's crime spree can easily lead to more of the series' signature political commentary.
