Rockstar Games has announced that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Grand Theft Auto V will be released on November 11, 2021. GTA 5 is one of the most popular video games of all time, which is why fans have been eagerly awaiting its current-gen update.

The fact that Sony kicked off its PS5 reveal event with news regarding Grand Theft Auto 5, rather than any of its own first-party games, shows just how beloved the game is. GTA 5 was originally released during the PS3 and Xbox 360 console generation, and it was still making millions of dollars a year as of 2020. It's currently the second best-selling video game of all time (sitting behind only Minecraft), and it continues to endure in sales charts almost eight years on.

The official Rockstar Games website has announced that the upgraded version of Grand Theft Auto 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will be released on November 11. There will also be a standalone version of GTA Online released, with PS5 owners getting free access to it for three months upon launch.

It's still unclear exactly what the current-gen enhancements of GTA 5 will be. The game will certainly have better visuals and faster loading times on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but Rockstar has yet to detail or demonstrate how the new versions of the game compare to older ones. It's also unclear if people who already purchased the game for PS4 and Xbox One will have free access to the current-gen versions. Most companies let customers know ahead of time if they get free access to both previous and current-gen versions of a game, but Rockstar hasn't officially confirmed anything of the sort. Rockstar could be smelling millions of dollars in additional sales for GTA 5, so fans might have to shell out yet again for latest generational upgrades after it charged PS3 and Xbox 360 version owners full price in 2014.

GTA 5 is already improved when playing on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware, thanks to their SSDs cutting down on the game's previously long load times. Versions of the title hand-tailored for the current-gen hardware could look and play even better, as mods for the PC version of GTA 5 have drastically increased the quality of the visuals, something that could easily be matched with official Rockstar tools onPS5 and Xbox Series X/S. November is always one of the busiest times in the gaming calendar, yet some of the newest games on the market will be competing for time with a juggernaut that was first released all the way back in 2013.
