Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 has brought players all sorts of impressive weapons, from the Special Carbine to the RPG. But as it turns out, GTA 5 was originally meant to have many more weapons that simply just never made the cut.

There are a variety of likely reasons as to why Rockstar Games chose not to include the following weapons. The sheer size of the game is already impressive as is, and animating even more weapons and vehicles may have been too great a feat where money and time is concerned. Even more, having too many weapons in the game could become difficult to keep track of, especially in terms of multiplayer, as it can be tough to differentiate between their similarities, and even more difficult to balance.

Finally, when compared to previous Grand Theft Auto games, GTA 5 took on a more realistic tone. There are no dildos to use as melee weapons in Grand Theft Auto 5, after all. So, choosing to ax certain weapons may have been in an effort to produce a certain realistic, grounded atmosphere. But regardless of the reason for these weapons being cut, it’s fun to imagine what GTA 5 could have been like with these additions.

What Weapons Were Cut From GTA 5?

There were several vehicles with built-in weapons that didn’t make the cut, according to the GTAWiki which scoured the game's code for missing items. The Hind, a vehicle meant to replicate GTA’s P-996 LAZER, was supposed to have both a gun and rocket-launching mechanic. Similarly, the Vulkan was a scrapped military VTOL fighter jet that never made it into the final game, also equipped with rockets and bullets. The FH-1 Hunter appears in various GTA games but is not available to use in GTA 5, though it briefly appears in the game’s fictional movie Meltdown. Finally, while GTA 5’s sub-aquatic vehicle Submersible, made it into the game, it was originally meant to be equipped with weapons.

There are also a variety of hand-held weapons that were scrapped. Grand Theft Auto 5's weapons were originally meant to feature a gun that would shoot rubber bullets. There was also supposed to be a megaphone (called a Loudhailer in the game files) and a lasso. Originally, developers were planning to allow players to utilize fire axes, shovels, and wrenches as melee weapons, though the idea didn’t pull through. Guns that got cut from GTA 5 include the Programmable A.R., a smart gun that was based on XM-25, the Assault MG, based on the HK21, the Assault Sniper, inspired by the M110 rifle, and the Heavy Rifle, modeled after a SCAR rifle. There was also going to be a Laser Sight attachment that would point a laser in the bullet’s direction, helping with accuracy and range. Similarly, the Advanced Rifle, the Combat MG, and the Assault SMG all looked different when the game was initially being developed.

With GTA 5 being ported for the PlayStation 5, there’s a possibility the remastered game could feature some of the weapons that didn’t make the cut, or entirely new weapons to enhance gameplay. There’s also no word on if and when a GTA 6 is happening, but it would also provide an excellent opportunity to incorporate these weapons which never made it out of beta. They say no one can have it all, and Rockstar had to make the tough choice to cut a variety of weapons from Grand Theft Auto 5, but there’s still hope these weapons will make an appearance in the future.
