GTA V had an absolutely incredible 2020, with its best year for sales since launching in 2013. The game has sold an unfathomable amount of copies and had a giant boost from people stuck at home looking for something to play during the pandemic. With all of this, GTA V has proven it's still an unstoppable force that will be difficult for other developers to compete with.

Rockstar has continued to give the game a ton of support over the last 7 years, much to the chagrin of its fans who are hoping for a new Grand Theft Auto game. In 2020, Rockstar released its biggest update for GTA V's online mode with the Cayo Perico Heist. The update added an all-new private island to explore along with a massive heist that encourages lots of replayability. The update also added tons of new music, vehicles, weapons, and much more to enhance the entire game.

During an earnings call from Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive, it was revealed that GTA V has sold over 140 million copies to date. The game has sold over 10 million additional copies since around May of 2020 which is the largest amount of units sold since the game launched in 2013. The game had sold just over 30 million upon releasing in 2013 and has only continued to grow with new updates and content. GTA V also had its best year for players in 2020, largely thanks to new updates and content.

GTA V will continue to grow later this year as an enhanced edition will be launching in the second half of 2021. This will bring Rockstar's open-world crime epic natively to Xbox Series X and PS5 where the game will continue to thrive. Rockstar has confirmed that the game will have exclusive content and updates on the new consoles along with the already-existing PC version. Details are still scarce for the port but a standalone version of GTA Online will release for free with PS+ around the same time.

With Grand Theft Auto VI still likely a ways away, there's plenty of room for GTA V to continue to grow. It's not hard to imagine that the game will easily go well beyond 150 million copies over the next year or two. Whenever Grand Theft Auto VI does release, it's likely it'll shatter GTA V's sales records with ease. With so much hype and excitement behind the biggest series in gaming along with the advancements Rockstar made with Red Dead Redemption 2, it's hard to imagine it won't be anything short of special.
