Grown-ish has been officially confirmed to be returning for season 5 on Freeform, with Black-ish star Marcus Scribner now set to make the crossover. The series, spawned from the critically acclaimed Black-ish, is now coming to the close of its fourth season, having developed a devoted fanbase of its own since becoming the first of many floated Black-ish spinoffs to release back in 2018. Offering a path to continue the stories of the young fan favorites of the parent series, Grown-ish follows Zoey Johnson as she navigate college life and the adult world beyond.
Now, TVLine reports that Grown-ish has been renewed for season 5, and Marcus Scribner has been confirmed by Freeform to be joining Grown-ish lead, Yara Shahidi, in making the transition from Black-ish, reuniting the on-screen siblings for upcoming season 5. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, showrunner Julie Bean has left the project to be replaced by current Black-ish counterpart, Courtney Lilly, and Zakiyyah Alexander, best known for La Brea and Hunters, as co-showrunners for the next season. The news of the series' renewal comes as season 4 reaches its finale, with Shahidi's Zoey and her friends preparing for graduation and set for life after college when the season concludes on March 24.
The most successful spinoff of the Black-ish universe, Grown-ish appears to be going strong into its fifth year. With the potential Old-ish starring Laurence Fishburne shelved for the foreseeable future and the unfortunate cancellation of Mixed-ish, Grown-ish has been the one to strike a chord with viewers. Delving into the stories of the franchise's younger subjects, it seems it will be Grown-ish to carry the torch for any further expansion of Kenya Barris' creation.
