Broodmother is the first real boss battle players will have to face in the survival game Grounded. As a shrunken human within the world of a backyard, there are plenty of creatures players will have to look out for, but this one must be hunted down. Many steps are required before you can conquer this arachnid beast. You must discover a bait recipe, create it, find the Broodmother's den, and place the bait inside.

To start, players will need to have unlocked the oven which grants a couple of smoothies and other recipes to make. The specific recipe needed to use as bait for the Hedge Broodmother is the Broodmother BLT smoothie.

There are three items needed to create the smoothie and three other items needed to create an oven.

Oven Recipe:

Item Needed

Locations

  • 1 Everburning Charcoal Chunk

One can be found near the barbecue.

  • 10 pieces of Clay

Clay can be harvested around many wet or flooded areas.

  • 4 Boiling Glads

Dropped by Bombardier Beetles.

Broodmother BLT Smoothie Recipe:

Item Needed

Locations

  • 1 Thistle Needle

Can be found in Spade Gulch and near the Giant Oak.

  • 2 Lady Bug Parts

Dropped by Ladybugs.

  • 2 Bombardier Beetle Parts

Dropped by Bombardier Beetles.

After creating these items, prep for the fight by collecting as many stamina rejuvenating items, healing items, armor, weapons, and splatburst bombs as possible.

Once fully prepped, head to the Broodmother's den which happens to be inside the hedge near the Apricop Punch-O where you should be able to find a zipline. Take it and follow the branches to the frisbee caught in the hedge. To the right of the frisbee is the opening of the Broodmother's den.

There will be no enemies within until the bait has been placed. Place the bait inside the strange green fungi deep in the nest to cause the Broodmother to drop down inside her den.

How to Kill the Hedge Broodmother in Grounded

Grounded the Broodmother

Once the boss fight has started, pick a favored weapon such as the bow or mint mallet. For the mint mallet, focus on blocking with a shield and getting up close and personal with the creepy crawly. Or, if that's too freaky, use the bow with the marksman's cap and good arrows to keep a healthy distance between the character and the Broodmother's chelicerae.

She will cycle through a couple of different attacks including a lunge, a three-part bite, and a heavy reeled attack. This makes her extremely difficult to keep away from. She will constantly jump atop the character, making it difficult to attack and dodge her. Depending on the player's build and gear dodging may be a little more or less feasible.

Ladybug or Acorn armor grants extra health to the player, which would be more useful for a player who wants to engage in melee combat. Whereas an archer should use the Spider or Grub armor for boosted stamina. Aphid slippers are another useful item for either type of player to give them a bit more speed in their step. Lastly, either type of player should use the splatburst bombs to deal some heavy damage, just don't stick them to the Broodmother herself as she will bring the bomb to the player.

Remember that the Broodmother will also call for reinforcements a couple of times throughout the fight.

These reinforcments are just spiderlings in the first round, so smashing them quickly and watching your health bar will be enough. Trying to use the splatburst bombs here is likely a dangerous idea. The second and third rounds of reinforcements are small orb weavers, which are a bit nastier to face down and should be bombed and outran.

Keep pressure on the Broodmother while dodging and a victory should be imminent. Once defeated there is a random chance of some sweet Grounded loot including; Broodmother Chunks, Fangs, Venom, Web Fibers, and a Trinket.
