Does The Grinch Have An After-Credits Scene?

Illumination Entertainment's The Grinch offers a modern retelling of Dr. Seuss's classic Christmas tale - but does it have an after-credits scene continuing the story? The story of the Grinch started off as a children's book written by Dr. Seuss published in 1957. It was adapted into an animated TV special in 1966, then a live-action movie in 2000. Now, Illumination Entertainment is reimagining the classic story for a new generation with The Grinch. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Grinch, the movie tells a slightly different version of the story of how the Grinch tries to steal Christmas from the town of Whosville.

In this version of Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Cindy Lou Who (Cameron Seely) is the young daughter of a harried singler mother - Donna Lou Who (Rashida Jones) - who plots to trap Santa Claus in an effort to get a very specific Christmas wish. However, Cindy Lou doesn't know her plan puts the Grinch's own nefarious scheme in jeopardy. The resulting film is a new spin on the classic Christmas tale set to hit theaters just in time for the holiday season.

Moviegoers heading to theaters to see The Grinch may be wondering if there's more to the movie after the credits finishing rolling. Unfortunately, The Grinch doesn't have an after-credits scene. Instead, the movie has some fun animation that plays throughout the first half of the credits.

Though the animation sequences that are depicted during the credits aren't necessary to enjoying The Grinch, they do confirm some aspects of the film's conclusion. Without getting into spoilers, the animated bits during the credits do continue the story beyond the ending of The Grinch, but largely just showcase the day-to-day lives of the main characters: the Grinch, Cindy Lou and Donna Lou. While the pieces of animation don't necessarily add anything viewers can't presume based on the film's ending, they are some additional fun for the families that stick around through the credits.

While post-credits scenes have become the norm for superhero movies in Hollywood, they're still relatively rare in other film genres. Certainly, Disney does occasionally include post-credits scenes on their animated movies. For instance, Moana had a post-credits scene featuring one of the film's funnier characters. But more often than not, post-credits scenes tease a sequel, and it's unlikely The Grinch will receive one. Though the story has been retold many times, it's not one that's open for sequel potential. As such, it makes sense for Illumination to include some additional bits featuring the characters of The Grinch during the credits, but not a full-blown post-credits scene.
