The new poster for The Grinch (2018) from Illumination Entertainment reveals what the Grinch looks like as a wide-eyed youngster, long before his Christmas stealing days. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the 3D upgraded Grinch in the new movie based on Dr. Seuss’ classic 1957 children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Peter Candeland and Yarrow Cheney direct, with Matthew O’Callaghan also credited as co-director.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas of course was first adapted as an animated TV special in 1966. Boris Karloff voiced that classic take on the Grinch, a mean old creature bent on ruining Christmas for the kind-hearted people of Whoville. Chuck Jones did the artful, charming animation for the original. Now Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind the world-dominating Despicable Me and Minions, will update the Grinch for the computer age. Originally set for a 2017 release, the film was pushed back a year by the studio.
With a little less than a year to go before the movie’s release, Illumination Entertainment has released a teaser poster for The Grinch. In the image, we get to see a much younger, more wide-eyed take on the character. But never fear Grinch fans: the poster promises “he gets meaner.” Does this glimpse of a pre-grouch Grinch in fact mean audiences are in for a full-on Grinch origin story? Could we get a whole Grinch trilogy that shows how the Grinch went bad, a la the Star Wars prequels? Check out the new poster below.
In addition to the 1966 TV special, Hollywood in 2000 gave us a live action How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Jim Carrey played the 2000 Grinch under heavy prosthetics and managed to be much creepier than the Boris Karloff version. (Mike Myers was mostly just creepy too when he played the Cat in the Hat in the 2003 live-action take.) The clear lesson from those movies: Dr. Seuss characters only work in book and cartoon form. They should never, ever be played by comic actors in weird make-up.
Thankfully for the souls of the little children, Illumination will keep things animated for their new take on The Grinch. The studio last tackled Seuss with 2012’s The Lorax, which made $214 million in the U.S. After proving their ability to make bank with Seuss, the studio will go back to the well with The Grinch. In this instance, Illumination will compete with a classic that for many people will always be the perfect take. Illumination at one point was reportedly working on an animated Cat in the Hat as well, but there have been no recent updates on that project.
