Kate Walsh will return as Addison in Grey’s Anatomy season 18. Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy debuted on ABC in 2005 and is now hailed as the longest-running medical drama in television history. Starring Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, the series has witnessed the introduction and exit of numerous characters during its run. Introduced in the final scene of the season 1 finale, Dr. Addison Montgomery Shepherd, a neonatal surgeon and Derek’s wife, quickly became a fan favorite. After three seasons, Addison left Seattle for Los Angeles, and Walsh starred in the successful spin-off, Private Practice.

Dedicated to healthcare workers, season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy tackles the relevant storyline of the coronavirus pandemic and features the surprise return of characters from past seasons in a dream-like sequence as Meredith battles the effects of COVID-19. While the medical series brought back familiar faces, season 17 revealed the exits of Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), Tom Koracick (Greg Germann), and Dr. Jackson Avery, played by longtime cast member Jesse Williams. Now, it appears the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will have a familiar doctor to page.

As reported by TVLine, Walsh will reprise her role as Addison in season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy for multiple episodes. At this time, Addison’s storyline has not been revealed. While starring on Private Practice, Walsh appeared on Grey’s Anatomy for crossover episodes and guest-starring stints, most recently in season 8 for the alternate reality episode titled “If/Then.”

Addison in Grey's Anatomy

Of course, Grey’s Anatomy appears to be gearing up for a memorable season 18. Recently, it was announced that Kate Burton, who played Meredith’s mother Ellis Grey, is slated to return for multiple episodes in the upcoming season. Indeed, Addison has a long history with Meredith and Amelia Shepherd, but Walsh’s return could mean there’s an eventful arc on the horizon, as Walsh has stated in the past that an Addison comeback wasn’t out of the realm of possibility, but she felt Addison’s journey was complete.

As for Grey’s Anatomy, it remains to be seen when the show will sign off. Overall, the series continues to revolve around Meredith Grey, and it can be expected that the cast will continue to make alternations and bring back original characters as long as the series remains on the air. For now, longtime fans of the show can look forward to Addison’s poise, astute observance, and expertise returning to the halls of the hospital. Grey’s Anatomy kicks off season 18 on September 30.
