Maggie Pierce joined Grey's Anatomy in season 10 and quickly showed fans that she was more than just Meredith's half-sister. While it has been great to see the two develop a deeper connection, Maggie has had other storylines that have explored deep topics, including terminal illnesses, grief, and mental health.

Fans have gotten to know Maggie over the years and she has proven herself to be an interesting, intelligent, and compassionate person who takes her job super seriously. From her romantic life to the way that she acts at work, viewers find Maggie to be very easy to relate to.

Maggie Doesn't Have A Perfect Family Life

Maggie is an open and honest person. When fans get to know her, they learn that her family life is far from perfect, as her biological parents are Ellis Grey and Richard Webber. Maggie's adoptive parents are wonderful, but she did grow up wondering who her mom and dad were, and those questions seem to make her want to excel in work and school even more.

Maggie learning that she's Richard's daughter serves a few purposes here: it not only allows the two characters to connect in a real and genuine way, which is very moving, but it makes Maggie relatable, as everyone's family situation is different and unique.

Maggie Can Struggle With Dating

Maggie's dating life is a focal point of season 14, as she ends up dating a man named Clive, only to call it off when she learns he's actually married from Tinder. She also struggles with her love life throughout her time on the show, as her relationships with Andrew, Jackson, and Dean don't work out.

This makes Maggie an incredibly relatable character, as many people watching Grey's Anatomy have been on bad dates or have tried their best to make a relationship last and then realized that it's not in the cards. Maggie is a great reminder that everyone has trouble with different parts of their lives, and for some, it takes them a bit longer to meet that person.

People Underestimate Her

When Maggie begins working at the hospital, she's the head of cardio, but while Cristina agrees that Maggie is the right person for the job, she doesn't show her much respect. Cristina acts like Maggie isn't in charge at all, which is difficult and upsetting for Maggie.

This storyline makes Maggie easy to relate to, as others underestimate her. In the case of her medical career, people think that she's too young and wonder if she can really do a great job. Many people have faced other people's judgments, assumptions, and expectations at one point or another, and everyone has to prove themselves in their chosen career.

Her Parents Split Up

While Grey's Anatomy is focused on medicine and romance, the characters' family backgrounds do come up often, and fans have gotten to know some of Meredith's great and long-lost relatives. However, fans had been really excited to learn a little more about Maggie's.

They got their wish in the season 11 episode 'Time Stops,' when Maggie finds out that her parents are breaking up. Viewers were sad to learn about Maggie's parents' marriage, but since many people, unfortunately, have to deal with their parents' divorces, this does make Maggie a relatable character. While talk of divorce is often focused on couples who have young children or teenagers, it can definitely happen when those children are adults themselves, and it's still as devastating.

Her Work/Life Balance Is Off

Before Diane dies, she tells Maggie to try and find a balance between her work and personal life. She also told Maggie to try her best to have more fun. This was definitely something that Maggie took to heart, as she works so much that she doesn't always think about her personal life.

This is great advice and makes Maggie easy to relate to. Many people can find themselves caught up in schoolwork or a new job, or even just the daily work of their chosen career. When wanting to work hard and do well, having a social life can fall by the wayside. It's interesting to see this idea explored during Maggie's character arc.

She And Winston Date Long-Distance

Since Winston lived in Boston, he and Maggie date long-distance for a while, before he eventually moves to Seattle. For many people, their relationship is quite relatable as many couples are trying long-distance relationships (perhaps if they were in college, grad school, or living in different areas).

Both characters are devoted to their jobs but to each other, too, and it's moving to watch them balance these parts of their lives.

She Finds A Great Support System

From the moment she stepped into Grey Sloan Memorial, Maggie immediately formed strong bonds with her colleagues. These colleagues and family members would eventually become a pillar of support for her, helping her through some moments where she was struggling.

Jackson, Meredith, and Amelia were there to support her when she was grieving for her mother. Alex and Richard comforted her when her cousin passed away. Although they didn't interact much, even Callie comforted Maggie when she broke up with Ethan. Maggie's support system is something some fans might be able to relate to.

She Plans Two Different Weddings

It's wonderful to see Maggie and Winston tie the knot at the end of season 17 of Grey's Anatomy, and their wedding is supposed to be fairly tiny and in Meredith's backyard. After Richard says that they need a bigger wedding, they wait until April 2021 and have a larger gathering on the beach.

Anyone who has gotten married and had to plan a few different weddings, or who has wondered if they should go with an intimate affair or a larger party, can relate to this storyline. It's nice to see a TV character who is dealing with a lot before their big day, as IRL, the path to the altar is rarely smooth.
