Grey’s Anatomy hit audiences hard this year by announcing that Meredith Grey was leaving Grey Sloan Memorial and a new promo hints that Nick may not be following Meredith to Boston. While Meredith and Nick Marsh have only been romantically involved since season 18, it felt like the show was setting the couple to be the ultimate endgame. However, with Meredith moving to Boston so Zola can attend a gifted children’s school, it may not end the way audiences thought.
Ever since the death of Dr. Derek Sheppard in season 11, Meredith’s love life never really felt like it was right, but that changed with Nick. Meredith seemed genuinely happy, and it seemed the couple would go the distance. It was refreshing to see Meredith so happy after all she had been through on Grey’s Anatomy. And while Meredith’s new beginning in Boston isn’t sad, it is bittersweet.

Nick And Meredith Walk Away From Each Other In Promo
In the promo for the mid-season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith and Nick can be seen walking away from one another, and Meredith has a suitcase. While much of Nick and Meredith’s relationship has been spent in hotel rooms and traveling between Seattle and Minnesota, this felt a little more final. Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh literally part ways, so it’s not too far of a stretch to think this is their final goodbye before she leaves for Boston.
Additionally, Nick just started as the residency director for the newly reopened surgical residency program. He’s been able to excel at the job with the interns and has even had a positive impact on Schmidt, the only senior resident. It would be odd to see Nick make such a large career change, just to quit and move to Boston with Meredith. The couple has done long distance before, it might be they do it again.
It’s Right That Meredith Never Really Moves On From Derek
Meredith has said before that Derek was her epic love story, so it also feels fitting if the distance is too much for Meredith and Nick. Derek is the father to Meredith’s three children and his legacy lives on in them. Zola said she wants to be a neurosurgeon like her father, which is just another way Derek would live on. Meredith leaving so that Zola can be around like-minded kids is something Derek would’ve done too. If Grey’s Anatomy is going to end with Zola becoming a surgical resident, as many fans predict, this is the natural next step for that to happen.
Even though there’s no indication if Grey’s Anatomy will have more seasons after this one, it’s exciting to think about Meredith taking on a new adventure that had never been seen previously. Hopefully, audiences get the best of both worlds and get to see Meredith have her happily ever after with Nick, while also honoring Derek’s memory with her children. Either way, the mid-season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy will be an episode audiences cannot miss.
