Cristina Yang and Owen Hunt's romance was a shipworthy favorite on Grey's Anatomy. It was both sweet and difficult to watch these two characters together, as they cared about each other but had a long list of problems that never got solved.
Most of Cristina's quotes were inspirational and she always gave good advice to her friends and colleagues. But as is often the case, she didn't always see her own life clearly, and that was especially true of her romantic entanglements. While Cristina and Owen were definitely a popular couple on this hospital drama, they were also super confusing.
He Didn't Share His Traumatic Past With Her
In the fifth season episode "Elevator Love Letter," Cristina realized that Owen had PTSD when he choked her in the middle of the night.
This was sad, heartbreaking, disturbing, and dark, and it started some problems in their relationship. It also spoke to the fact that Owen didn't talk to Cristina enough. While they had their love of surgery and medicine in common, he didn't go deep when talking to her, and that meant that their romance was doomed. Someone has to be able to share the good and the bad with their partner.
They Didn't Agree On Starting A Family
Cristina had an abortion, and she had been clear with Owen from the beginning that she didn't want to have children. Owen definitely ignored that fact and acted like of course she would change her mind.
This is a really big subject that couples have to discuss, especially if they want to get married or commit to each other. Since these two characters had different opinions on starting a family, why did they stay together for so long? It wasn't something that they could ignore or push aside easily.
Owen Cheated On Cristina
Love is never easy on Grey's Anatomy and even the show's most popular pairs have hurt each other.
Owen cheated on Cristina, which was hard to believe, as he had always seemed to be all in with the relationship. This decision didn't make any sense, as he wanted to settle down and start a family with her.
They Got Back Together But Cristina Could Have Gotten Help
Owen Hunt has a long and complicated backstory, and he and Cristina definitely had a complex relationship.
After they got back together, Owen saw a therapist so he could work through his issues with mental health. But why didn't Cristina get some help herself? It's not always easy to love someone with trauma, and if she wanted to make things work with him, she could have talked to a therapist and gotten some support. It didn't seem like she was really committed, which didn't make sense since she claimed to love him.
If They Were So In Love, Why Was Cristina So Afraid?
Of course anyone would be afraid after their partner hurt them while they were sleeping (or at any time). But if Cristina loved Owen so much, why was she so afraid of him?
It didn't make sense that she was so horrified to be around him and that she really thought that he would hurt her. If they really wanted to be together, maybe they could have slept in different rooms. It wouldn't be perfect or ideal but there must have been something that they could have done.
Owen Said Teddy Was A Present For Cristina
When Owen asked Teddy to start working at the hospital, he presented her as a "present" for Cristina. He wanted Teddy to be able to learn from an incredibly smart and great doctor.
This was really strange, though, since Teddy and Owen have a long and difficult history. Teddy has always been in love with him, and it seems like Owen feels the same way. Why would Owen ask someone he had a crush on to work with Cristina? Didn't he realize that things would get too messy? Of course, Teddy and Owen do eventually date and Teddy even cheats on Owen.
Owen Was Harsh And Cruel About Cristina's Abortion
Cristina changed during her time on the show and she found the courage to share that she wasn't going to become a mother. This wasn't easy for her and she showed such strength when she chose to get an abortion.
Owen was incredibly harsh and cruel about this choice. He said that she "killed their baby," which was horrible of him. It didn't make sense that he would go that far and be that mean. He knew that she felt differently than he did about kids and yet he still took things to that dark level.
They Broke Up Too Many Times
If a couple is really in love and committed to each other, constantly breaking up and reuniting makes no sense. Unfortunately, this is exactly what this couple did.
Owen and Cristina could never decide if they were better together or apart and this was ultimately the nail in the coffin of their love story. Instead of behaving like adults, they would become upset with each other and run away.
They Kept Coming Back To The Same Problems
Something else that makes no sense about Owen and Cristina's relationship? Instead of working on their problems, they kept coming back to the same ones, and they didn't try to fix anything.
They knew that they had one major issue (the fact that Cristina didn't want kids and Owen did), and yet they did nothing to work it out. For two intelligent people, this was baffling. Didn't they get sick and tired of it?
Why Did Cristina Give Everything To Alex?
Alex Karev was never a perfect character but many fans agree that he became nicer as time went on.
While he and Cristina were friends, it didn't make sense that she gave him everything when she moved to Switzerland. She gave him her shares and seat on the board of the hospital. If she loved Owen so much, why wouldn't she give these things to him? Wouldn't it be a beautiful parting gift?
