Since he became a part of this family of doctors, Cormac has been gaining popularity in the fan community. So far, he has proven to be nothing but a kind, hardworking, and strong ethical doctor, who is figuring out how to fit in his new workplace. The audience has learned about his tragic past and how he is a father to two but they know that there is a lot more to discover about Dr. Hayes. Naturally, it's easy to expect that his storyline will develop into a more fulfilling one.

To Be Given More Screen Time (And Tough Responsibilities)

During a short period of time, there was speculation circling that Cormac might have been taken off the show permanently since he didn't appear in a few episodes.

Some fans couldn't wait to see more of him and started conjecturing all sorts of theories. But COVID's restrictions and pauses in filming proved to be the only reason why he was not seen so often. Recently, he has been given more screen time and people can only hope that this trend continues.

Developing A Really Close Friendship With At Least One Colleague

Currently, Hayes is one of the most well-respected doctors at Grey Sloan's Hospital. His transfer from a Swiss medical research institute, influenced by Cristina, did not come about because they were close friends. Rather, Cormac has suggested that the two didn't really get along on a personal level but they admired each other as professionals. Therefore, he has yet to show a close connection with any colleague so it would be interesting to see him engage more with other physicians.

While his only friend in Seattle is fighting for her life with COVID, he has grown closer to Jo Wilson. However, that might have more to do with her desire to have a career switch. Nonetheless, this could mean that Cormac and Jo will become buddies and he could mentor her into the pediatric specialty.

Good Character Development And Storylines

An image of Cormac Hayes in Grey's Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy has had plenty of characters who have portrayed the image of "nice, decent people" for a very long time until they revealed either some dark secret or acted in a despicable way towards someone else. Examples of that are easy to find in events like when Izzie left Alex via letter (and Alex did the same to Jo), or when Callie's custody battle became really disappointing.

Unforeseeable plot twists that ultimately altered fans' perspectives have been common so there might be some apprehension regarding Hayes. Fans would certainly be frustrated if the writers came up with a storyline that could ruin the good guy perception that the audience has of this character.

Sticking Around For The Long Haul

If there's one thing that the vast majority of viewers would want about Hayes, is that they hope he won't be killed or leave the show anytime soon. His character's arc is barely starting to develop and fans wouldn't want to miss his personality, sarcastic humor, and impeccable professionalism with children. Moreover, most people suspect that Cormac will become Meredith's next love interest.

There's so much about him/his life that needs to be met more deeply and it would be unreasonable to assume that this character is going to be cut off anytime soon.

Showing A Softer Side When Talking To Patients' Parents

An image of Cormac Hayes in Grey's Anatomy

This top-notch doctor, nicknamed McWidow, has shown bits of his natural charm to his patients ever since he joined Grey's Anatomy. It's easy to see why Cormac is the current Head of Pediatric Surgery of Seattle's famous hospital as he is so good at easing the fears of the kids and teenagers. Yet, when it comes to his approach to telling his patients' families what to expect if surgery or medication goes badly for their child, he tends to be too rigid and unemotional.

The audience now understands that he does so because he wishes that his wife's doctors had given him all the information about her treatment options. Thus, even though he is trying to be as transparent as possible, the way he does it will hopefully become more compassionate and relatable as time goes on since everyone reacts to trauma in different ways.

Developing A Closer Bond With His Sons

Cormac Hayes and his sons in Grey's Anatomy

Most fans know that Cormac is still grieving losing the love of his love and the mother of his children. Unfortunately, he carries the weight of raising his two sons on his shoulders, and, up until he came along to the show, he had not been interested in finding a partner and stepmother to Liam and Austin.

Though viewers have not seen Hayes interact all that much with his boys, it's easy to think that this season this father-sons relationship will develop. Cormac already brought them to the hospital on a day when there was no school due to parent-teacher conferences. It would be interesting to see these kids bonding with their father (and perhaps having clashes between them as well) in future episodes.

Being A Hero By Saving A Patient From An Extremely Rare Disease/Condition

Fans have seen so many Grey Sloan's doctors get hurt, suffer losses, and face almost every medical situation imaginable. While it's clear that Dr. Hayes is exceptional in his pediatric skill and a very talented surgeon, viewers have yet to see him having a really strong case in his hands that would potentially turn him into a "miracle maker."

Cormac has performed several successful surgeries but it would be nice to see him shine in more or less traditional situations that he has faced. With that in mind, there's hope that he will gain more power too as his arc evolves.

Having Meredith Reciprocating His Romantic Interest

Hayes has big shoes to fill when it comes to winning Grey's heart. Yet, he is off to a good start since not only sparks fly when they talk to each other but Cristina Yang also has given her approval, which is something that means a lot to her long-distance BFF.

Fans remember that this duo was supposed to get a drink together, but with the pandemic and Meredith falling sick, that plan was postponed. So, hopefully, they will have more opportunities to explore their chemistry after a fully healed Meredith is back on her feet.

Finding The Ideal Long-Lasting Partner (Even If It's Not Meredith)

This man definitely deserves to find a new "better half." He has his eyes on Meredith and things might progress in a romantic way between them, especially now that DeLuca is no longer an option. They have so much in common and it would be easy to imagine them as a couple, creating one beautiful blended family.

Both Cormac and Meredith are great, loving parents and they have already shared a bond over the loss of their spouses. However if, in the end, these two just remain as good friends who understand each other better than most, fans really wish Hayes to meet a special, solid, and trustworthy woman who will win his heart.
