Greta Gerwig has made a name for herself with movies like Little Women and Lady Bird. If there's one thing she's proven to be good at, it's showing the female perspective on screen and the struggles that young women encounter in their lives.
Barbie, on the other hand, sounds like a unique project for Gerwig. Fans all know Barbie as the iconic kid's doll who seemingly never makes a mistake, but with Gerwig taking charge of the character, viewers might see her face some new difficulties for the first time. While fans patiently wait for the film to release, there are some other movies to enjoy that totally give off the Barbie vibe.
Life-Size
Life-Size stars Tyra Banks and a young Lindsay Lohan in a movie about a little girl who accidentally wishes her doll to life. Over the course of the film, the doll and the girl form a bond and slowly become friends.
This hilarious flick shares a similar plot to Gerwig's upcoming film. Barbie will also follow the story of a doll being brought into the real world, so this movie is perfect for viewers wanting to get a taste of that ahead of time.
Enchanted
Enchanted features Princess Giselle, portrayed by Amy Adams, as she's brought out of her fairytale land and into the real world by an evil witch. In the real world, she has to learn how to adapt and become an ordinary person. This proves challenging, as she loves to sing, dance, and talk to animals.

Even though this movie follows a princess instead of a doll, it still shares a similar storyline to the upcoming Gerwig Barbie adaptation. Innocent and sweet, Adam's character gives off Barbie energy too.
Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde follows Reese Witherspoon as Elle, a young woman who enrolls in law school in order to win back her ex-boyfriend. Elle is the typical rich blonde girl, but over the course of the film, she begins to grow as a person.
Elle is totally reminiscent of Barbie, with blonde hair and a love of pink as well as the finer things in life. A mix of smart and stylish, does all of her work in the best fashion, just like the doll. Not only that, but Legally Blonde has inspirational quotes that Barbie would undoubtedly agree with.
Weird Science
Weird Science is one of John Hughe's best teen comedies, following two boys who decide to invent the perfect woman in order to become popular at school.
While this movie has more of a high school setting, the creation of a perfect woman being brought into the real world definitely gives off Barbie vibes. This isn't one of Hughes's most popular films, but it's certainly one of his hidden gems, and even has Robert Downey Jr. as part of the cast.
Godmothered
Godmothered is a new holiday movie that is perfect for watching all year round. It follows a fairy godmother, portrayed by Jillian Bell, as she goes on a quest to help a girl's dreams come true in order to prevent the "fairy godmother" job from going out of business.
Godmothered is an incredibly fun movie that focuses on a fairy trying to blend in with humans. This film shares similarities to other movies like Enchanted and fellow holiday flick Elf, with a character having to learn how to adapt to the normal world.
Clueless
Clueless, starring Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd, follows Cher Horowitz, a teenage girl who decides to help a new student at school become popular. This movie is a modern adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel Emma.
Cher Horowitz exudes Barbie's energy in Clueless, from her upscale fashion to her go-getter personality. Clueless makes viewers nostalgic for '90s fashion, with nearly every character in the film wearing iconic outfits that are often re-created for Halloween over 20 years later. If there's one thing viewers will also expect from Barbie, it's the same level of iconic fashion.
13 Going On 30
13 Going On 30 follows Jennifer Garner's character, Jenna Rink, after making a wish to become 30 years old at her 13th birth party. The next day, her wish comes true and she finds out she's everything she wished she'd be.
13 Going On 30 is a classic rom-com that is often compared to films like Legally Blonde and Clueless because it's girly, has great fashion, and follows a character who changes for the better over the course of the film. This is exactly what many viewers are expecting from Barbie, making this one a perfect watch for viewers anticipating its release.
Confessions Of A Shopaholic
Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy star in Confessions of a Shopaholic, a movie about a young woman with a shopping addiction who finds herself in massive debt. No longer able to buy whatever she wants, she takes on a new job and begins falling in love with a wealthy man.
If fans are most excited to watch Barbie for both the fashion and to watch her struggles in the human world, then Confessions of a Shopaholic might be the perfect substitute until Barbie releases. It's likely the new Barbie film will be a more realistic twist on the character, showing her working a normal job and struggling, and this film also provides just that.
Mean Girls
Mean Girls follows Cady, portrayed by Lindsay Lohan, as she moves away from Africa and attends an American high school. It's her first time not being homeschooled, and she discovers that high school teens can be manipulative and cruel. She decides to adapt to the environment and become popular in order to take down the biggest mean girl at school.
While the upcoming Barbie movie won't have a high school setting, the synopsis thus far reveals that Barbie will be kicked out of Barbieland due to the fact that she's not perfect. It seems like Barbie herself will also be dealing with tons of mean girls and will have to learn to stay true to herself.
Little Women
Little Women follows a group of sisters who are navigating their way through life in the early 1800s. There's romance, drama, and many inspirational moments in this movie. Little Women is a wholesome cottagecore movie that is also incredibly inspirational.
While this period piece might not have tons of pink, it was written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Fans waiting for Barbie should certainly take a dip into Gerwig's other films, just to get a feel for what to expect.
