A new Mountain Dew commercial reunites Billy and Gizmo from Gremlins. The original Gremlins movie came out in 1984. The film centers around the Mogwai, cute and fuzzy little creatures that can turn into crazy and destructive monsters called Gremlins. The sequel in 1990 wasn't as well-received, but fans have still been craving Gremlins 3 for the past 30 years.
Reports of Gremlins 3 have bounced around for the last decade or so. Unfortunately, there's not a clear answer as to whether Warner Bros. will ever release another sequel. Rumors of a potential remake or reboot started creeping up around 2013. A few years later, franchise star Zach Galligan revealed that the next Gremlins would be a sequel. Gremlins 3 was said to undo some of the events of Gremlins 2: The New Batch as the original film's writer, Chris Columbus, reportedly wasn't fond of the sequel. One version of Gremlins 3 was said to explore the mythology behind the Mogwai, but like the reboot, it never saw the light of day.
Gremlins 3 may or may not ever happen; however, Billy and Gizmo have now returned for Mountain Dew's latest commercial. The commercial shows Billy giving Gizmo a bottle of Mountain Dew Zero Sugar before the Mogwai spills it all over himself. Billy's daughter then comes in with her own mohawk-sporting Mogwai to roll her eyes at the situation.
This may be the closest thing that people ever get to seeing Gizmo and Billy together in live-action, yet the franchise is continuing in animated form. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is an upcoming animated TV show that will focus on Gizmo and Mr. Wing, the shopkeeper who sold Gizmo to Billy's dad in the movie. The series will take place in 1920s China, providing viewers with Mogwai mythology and cameos from the original Gremlins cast. An official release date for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai hasn't been set yet, but it is expected to be released sometime this year.
This video may just be a silly Mountain Dew commercial; however, it gives viewers an idea of what Gremlins 3 could be like. If the next Gremlins movie is a continuation of the first two films, Billy could certainly return as a middle-aged father, taking care of Gizmo and his child. That being said, Warner Bros. of course wouldn't have to consider this commercial canon. It would make sense to give Billy a child seeing how thirty years have passed, but the film would likely recast his daughter. However, all of this is pure speculation as the next Gremlins movie hasn't even been confirmed yet.
