Gremlins 3's Story Explored History & Mythology Of The Creatures

The Gremlins 3 story explored the history and mythology of the creatures. The Christmas season is typically an unfavorable time to release a horror film. However, back in 1984, Warner Bros. and Steven Spielberg decided to challenge that notion. Not only did the two cinematic powerhouses opt to release what was a somewhat family-friendly monster movie, but they also set the film during the holidays. The end result was Gremlins, a hugely successful, terrifying and fun romp that kick-started a sort of mania over creatures called Mogwais and Gremlins.

After its initial success in 1984, Spielberg and co. decided to give the concept another go, delivering Gremlins II: The New Batch in 1990. The sequel failed to come anywhere near the success of its predecessor, indicating that perhaps the Gremlins mania that had so tightly gripped the 80’s was officially over. However, fans have always maintained that a third Gremlins needed to be made and a third entry has been teased for quite some time. Now, details about what a third movie would have entailed have been revealed.

In an interview with ComingSoon, screenwriter Carl Ellsworth discusses his collaboration with original Gremlins writer Chris Columbus on a third Gremlins film. Apparently, the unused script followed the history and mythology of the Mogwai/Gremlins:

“I became friendly along the way with Zach Galligan, the original Billy Peltzer, and he was so eager to return to the role. He was excited, I guess, by the idea that he and Gizmo should be the equivalent of Han Solo and Chewie in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And he wasn’t too far off from where we were going. There was, I believe, a smaller role for Billy’s girlfriend, played [in the first two movies] by Phoebe Cates. But Gizmo was at the very core of the story; it explored more of the mythology and the history of the Gremlins.”

Ellsworth also stated that he hasn’t touched the script for three full years, meaning that either Spielberg’s efforts at resurrecting the franchise are over, or that another writer has already taken on the project. The original Gremlins was released 36 years ago this month, with the sequel having been released thirty years ago. Regardless of how one looks at it, it’s been a long time since anyone paid attention to either the Gremlins or the Mogwai. This certainly doesn’t mean that a third film is out of the question, however. In fact, a quick trip over to Spielberg’s IMDb page does list the project as one of the acclaimed filmmaker’s producing credits. Exactly when (or if) that credit will become a reality is anyone’s guess.

For now, Gremlins fans will simply have to remain content knowing that the wheels likely are in motion on a sequel, but no one seems to know much more than that. Until there has been a definite, official statement that Gremlins 3 will not happen, there’s every reason to believe that fans of the franchise will be delighted over Ellsworth’s recently divulged info on the long awaited film.
