WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 1 and George R. R. Martin's book, Fire & Blood!The Green party will have several key dragons on their side as they defend King Aegon II Targaryen’s claim in House of the Dragon’s civil war. Dragons are key to holding power in the upcoming conflict, with Daemon Targaryen already weighing the advantages Rhaenyra holds with the dragons on her side. Alongside Syrax, Caraxes, Meleys, Vermax, Tyraxes, and Moondancer, Daemon sets up six more potential dragons for the Black party after House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale. Despite the potential for twelve creatures on the Blacks’ side, Aegon’s Green party already has significant dragon power heading into the Targaryen civil war.
Following House of the Dragon’s season 1 finale, the Green party already holds three adult-sized dragons, including the oldest and strongest creature in the world. However, there are some young dragons on Aegon’s side that House of the Dragon has yet to depict. While some of the Greens’ dragons described in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book won’t be ridden during the Targaryen civil war, Aegon is expected to gain two formidable creatures after Targaryen and Velaryon bastards claim riderless dragons. By the end of House of the Dragon’s civil war, the Greens will have had possession of eight dragons, although a few will never fight in battles.
Vhagar (Aemond)
If the Greens didn’t have possession of Vhagar, they likely would have no chance to win the war. Aemond claiming Vhagar back in House of the Dragon episode 7 significantly leveled the playing field of the Dance of the Dragons, as the nearly 200-year-old battle-hardened creature is the strongest dragon in the world. Aemond and Vhagar will account for much of the destruction caused by the Green party in the Targaryen civil war, which began with the accidental murder of Prince Lucerys Velaryon and Arrax in House of the Dragon’s season 1 ending. With the volatile Aemond and deadly Vhagar being the Greens’ biggest assets, their domination culminates in a deadly showdown against Daemon and Caraxes at Harrenhal.
Sunfyre (Aegon)
King Aegon II Targaryen will ride his dragon Sunfyre during House of the Dragon’s civil war. The golden-scaled adult dragon may not be as formidable as Vhagar, but is a worthy foe against the Black party’s grown dragons. Surprisingly, House of the Dragon season 1 never included a scene between Aegon and Sunfyre, only briefly showing the dragon fly away from Driftmark after Laena Velaryon’s funeral. However, this error will certainly be corrected in House of the Dragon season 2’s battle scenes.
While Sunfyre survives the majority of the Targaryen civil war, the dragon isn’t often ridden. During the early Battle at Rook’s Rest in which Aegon and Aemond ride Sunfyre and Vhagar to ambush Princess Rhaenys Targaryen on Meleys, King Aegon is severely wounded and burned by the Blacks’ dragon. The Greens are successful in killing Rhaenys and Meleys, but Aegon’s wounds leave him incapacitated for some time, which means Sunfyre isn’t ridden for most of the war. Sunfyre and Aegon are eventually reunited after the latter flees King’s Landing to Dragonstone, with the dragon then burning and devouring Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Aegon is then attacked by Baela Targaryen on Moondancer, at which time the King’s cousin successfully kills Sunfyre.
Dreamfyre (Helaena)
One of the most mysterious dragons in Game of Thrones history is Dreamfyre, who was originally ridden by Aegon the Conqueror’s granddaughter Princess Rhaena Targaryen. Dreamfyre remained unclaimed for approximately 50 years after Rhaena’s death until the prophecy-gifted Princess Helaena Targaryen bonded with the dragon. While Helaena was implied to only occasionally ride Dreamfyre in her youth, George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book reveals that Helaena will never mount Dreamfyre during the Targaryen civil war. Rather, Helaena will spend the rest of her life in the Red Keep, no matter whether it’s ruled by Aegon or Rhaenyra. Dreamfyre will also never know another rider, as she is killed during House of the Dragon’s Storming of the Dragonpit.
Tessarion (Daeron)
Alicent and Viserys’ mysterious fourth child Daeron Targaryen is expected to appear in House of the Dragon season 2. While he was never seen or mentioned in House of the Dragon season 1, author George R.R. Martin confirmed on his blog that Daeron is, indeed, a character and has been living with his Hightower family in Oldtown. As the youngest of Alicent’s children, Daeron Targaryen’s dragon isn’t as large or formidable as those of his older siblings, but will still be a significant presence in the Greens’ battles. The dragon ridden by Daeron in House of the Dragon’s war is Tessarion, a young dragon described as being one-third the size of Vermithor.
Since Tessarion’s strength is more comparable to that of Prince Jacaerys’ dragon Vermax, the Greens primarily use Daeron’s mount in their campaigns in the Reach. Daeron and Tessarion remain with the Hightower host throughout the war, with their most significant actions being seen in the First and Second Battles at Tumbleton. At the latter battle, the dragon Seasmoke and its rider Addam Velaryon – the alleged bastard son of Laenor Velaryon – successfully defeated Tessarion and Prince Daeron Targaryen. Upon Tessarion's death, the Greens had lost nearly all of their dragons, with Aegon's mount Sunfyre perishing shortly after.
Shrykos (Jaehaerys)
Helaena and Aegon Targaryen’s twin children are briefly shown during House of the Dragon season 1, with one being their young son Prince Jaehaerys. King Aegon’s heir to the Iron Throne is bonded with the young dragon Shrykos during House of the Dragon’s civil war, but it’s implied in Fire & Blood that Jaehaerys never rode her. Since Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen suffers a brutal and cruel death during House of the Dragon’s Blood and Cheese assassination, Shrykos remains unclaimed throughout the civil war. The young dragon’s life also comes to an end in House of the Dragon’s war during the Storming of the Dragonpit, where she is slain by the woodsman Hobb the Hewer.
Morghul (Jaehaera)
Jaehaerys’ twin sister Jaehaera suffers numerous tragedies throughout the Dance of the Dragons, and manages to be one of the few characters who survive the war. Like Jaehaerys, young Jaehaera was bonded with a dragon but never rode it during her lifetime. Jaehaera was bonded with the young dragon Morghul, who was killed during House of the Dragon’s Storming of the Dragonpit.
Hugh Hammer (Vermithor)
In a major twist, the Green party will gain the strength of the second-largest living dragon in the world and its formidable rider Hugh Hammer. After being called to claim riderless dragons by Prince Jacaerys Velaryon during the “Sowing of the Seeds,” the silver-haired bastard Hugh Hammer manages to master the dragon Vermithor. While Hugh was initially bound to Rhaenyra’s Black party, he betrayed the Queen during the First Battle of Tumbleton, where he turned Vermithor against his own men. Hugh was then briefly pledged to Aegon’s Green party before setting forth his own campaign for the Iron Throne. When attacked by Addam Velaryon at the Second Battle of Tumbleton, both Hugh and Vermithor perished.
Ulf White (Silverwing)
Alongside Hugh Hammer, the silver-haired baseborn Ulf White claimed one of the dragons for the Black party during House of the Dragon’s Sowing. Ulf successfully bonded with the large dragon Silverwing, with the character riding the creature into battle for Queen Rhaenyra on several occasions. However, Ulf joined Hugh in betraying the Blacks for the Greens during the First Battle of Tumbleton. Only bound to Aegon’s party for a short time, Ulf was killed by the Greens for treason shortly after House of the Dragon’s First Battle of Tumbleton. Despite her rider being killed, Silverwing fled and remained wild throughout the rest of the Dance of the Dragons.
