Over the past few months we've had pretty steady updates about the upcoming comic book adaptation, Green Lantern, from Mark Strong being in talks to play the villain Sinestro and Blake Lively being cast as Hal Jordan's love interest, to the project getting an award-winning crew and (probably the most important news) the movie getting the official green light. Today we get another update that Sony has been tapped to handle the visual effects on the film.
Variety reports the news that Sony Imageworks will serve as the lead visual f/x studio on Green Lantern. The overall effects supervisors are still Karen Goulekas (The Day After Tomorrow) and Kent Houston (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), but we learn now that Jim Berney (I Am Legend) will be the lead effects supervisor for Imageworks.
If you're not familiar with the name, Sony Imageworks is responsible for the visual effects on such films as Watchmen (wow, that Dr. Manhattan effect was impressive), the Spider-Man movies, The Matrix sequels (at least the visuals looked great) and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. It's a great choice to handle the effects on Green Lantern in my opinion. Apparently the movie will have over 1,300 visual effects shots, which is a heck of a lot and isn't going to come cheap (at one point the budget reportedly ballooned past the $150 million mark).
So it looks like everything is completely on-track for Green Lantern's planned shooting start date of March this year and its set release date of June 17th, 2011. It's just one of many comic book adaptations in the works, with others including Thor, Captain America and, of course, The Avengers, all of which are coming out in the next couple of years. Us fans are going to have our hands full with all these heroes!
Are you happy with the studio that will be handling the Green Lantern f/x? Where does the project rank in your most anticipated list - particularly compared to other superhero movies that are in the works?
