Warning! Spoilers for Green Lantern #2!

The Green Lantern Corps just suffered one of their most devastating losses to date, as a terrorist organization attacked Oa while the group was being accepted into the United Planets. In the aftermath of the destruction, the Lanterns suffer another heartbreaking fortune, when Simon Baz - and a number of other Lanterns - are killed in an explosion, completely stunning the few surviving members of the Corps.

In recent months, the Green Lantern Corps has undergone some challenges as they try to refind their place in the galaxy. Future State has already teased the Central Power Battery on Oa being destroyed and sending the group into peril, as they had to learn to be heroes without the power of their rings. In the present, they had to prove themselves to the United Planets, as some of the fellow planets in the coalition didn't want Oa to join. While the Lanterns were eventually accepted, it meant they now answered to the United Planets as opposed to the Guardians of Oa. While all that occurred, Oa was attacked by the Yridian, a group of magical terrorists.

In Green Lantern #2 by Geoffrey Thorne, Dexter Soy, Marco Santucci, Alex Sinclair, and Rob Leigh, John Stewart informs the Corps of their currently unknown status among the United Planets, while the members head to Oa for the funeral of a slain Guardian. It's there the Guardian Memoysni informs the Corps they are going to give some power up to stand equal with other planets, as a number of sectors are made defunct. Stewart meets with the Guardians to express displeasure at the sudden reassignments and learns he's going to patrol the dark sector with thousands of other lanterns. However, when the ship launches the Central Power Battery explodes.

Green Lantern Corps Simon Baz

Sojourner Mullein, the Green Lantern of the Far Sector, gets the message about Oa and flies to the planet only to discover Teen Lantern holding Simon Baz's lifeless body - whose ring has flown away. Tears pour down the young Lantern's face as she says "dijo que cuidara de simon" which is Spanish "he told me to take care of Simon." Mullein's informed that there are no Green Lanterns left alive on Oa.

Not only is Baz seemingly killed in the blast, but the fate of other Lanterns, such as John Stewart and Kyle Rayner (the latter who was flying in space when the battery exploded) is unknown at this point as well. Considering Mullein's discovery that no Lanterns survived on Oa, the bomb might be the single most devastating blast in the history of the Green Lanterns. The question is, who is alive besides Jo and the Teen Lantern? Green Lantern #2 is in stores now.
