Jeremy Irvine, who will play Alan Scott on the Green Lantern TV show, provides updates on the HBO Max drama and more. While The CW has been a big destination for DC TV content over the last 10 years, HBO Max is becoming the new primary platform for Warner Bros. Since the launch of the HBO-branded streaming service, Warner Bros. has used it to roll out more content from the DC Universe. One of the biggest TV shows that the studio is working on is Green Lantern, from executive producer Greg Berlanti, the mastermind behind the Arrowverse.
Green Lantern, which was first announced in 2019, will be Berlanti's second attempt at the Emerald Knights, following the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds. Unlike the movie, HBO Max's Green Lantern will focus on several heroes of the DC title, including Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Alan Scott, and more. The DC drama, which was picked up to series in October 2020, has Seth Grahame-Smith attached as showrunner, with a 10-episode order for season 1. Since 2021, there hasn't been much movement on casting for Green Lantern, which stars Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner, while Jeremy Irvine is portraying Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern.
While Green Lantern hasn't moved forward as much as expected, the HBO Max product is still on its way. In a new Metro interview, Irvine was asked about the Green Lantern project and whether or not he has tried on his costume yet. Since getting cast in the role, Irvine hasn't done any costume fitting yet. However, the 31-year old actor did specify that when he was offered the gig, the Green Lantern creative team informed him how long it would take to make the Alan Scott costume, sharing the following:
"I haven’t yet. As far as I know, there’s not a firm start date yet. But when they offered me the role, they did say it was going to be about two or three months to make the outfit. Now they’re gonna have to fit my paunch into it."
Alan, who is best known as the Emerald Knight of the Justice Society of America, will have his story set in 1941 as the very first human Green Lantern. In this iteration of the hero, Alan is an FBI agent while also pulling duties as Green Lantern. Very much like his comic book counterpart, Alan will be depicted as gay. The show will take place across multiple decades, with Wittrock's Green Lantern operating in 1984. Other roles that remain to be cast are Simon, Jessica, Sinestro, and Bree Jarta, who will be an original creation for the series.
While it has undoubtedly been a long process for the Green Lantern TV show, there are a lot of factors to take into account. For starters, HBO Max has stated that Green Lantern will be one of the most expensive DC TV shows of all time, and certainly for Berlanti, who has produced multiple Arrowverse shows. The studio is also looking at Green Lantern as one of their crucial DC properties, with the Green Lantern Corps movie seemingly still in development. Since HBO Max has already handed out a 10-episode order, perhaps they wanted to have all the scripts written before getting filming underway, which will be VFX-heavy. Hopefully, there will be more news about Green Lantern sooner rather than later.
