Will Smith joins James Gunn's DC Universe as John Stewart in a new Green Lantern fan-made trailer. A new DC Universe is on its way as the DCEU is closing out later this year. With Gunn and Peter Safran running DC Studios together, they are taking the DC brand in a new direction. The duo revealed in late January the first batch of projects in Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters." More shows and films are expected to be announced later this year.

In an effort to create more connectivity, DC Universe will have series and films bridge with each other. One of the HBO Max series revealed was the Lanterns TV show, focusing on John Stewart and Hal Jordan.

While casting hasn't happened yet, fans are already imagining who will take on the iconic roles. Stryder HD recently released a Lanterns fan-made trailer showing Smith as John. Smith is no stranger to the DC realm, as he played Deadshot in David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

Everything We Know About DC Universe’s Green Lantern

Hal Jordan and John Stewart Green Lanterns DCU

The Lanterns show is officially replacing Greg Berlanti's Green Lantern TV series on HBO Max. Berlanti's project, which was set to headline John, got scrapped after a massive redevelopment in 2022. No creative team has currently been attached to Lanterns following the January announcement. DC Studios has also not set a time frame yet for when Lanterns is premiering.

According to Gunn and Safran, Lanterns will be a True Detective-inspired drama. With Hal and John as the leads, the detective mystery focuses on the two Green Lanterns as Earths' supercops. Per DC Studios, Lanterns' overall story will be the discovery of "an ancient horror." This threat will be woven between DC Universe shows and films.

As far as who will play John and Hal, Lanterns will likely not tap their leads until a head writer has been hired. It's possible that DC Studios are nearing a deal with a specific writer, who would likely be the showrunner too. But for now, time will tell when Lanterns will get up and running as DC Universe kicks off in the near future.
