There are several amazing and incredible abilities, powers, strengths, and objects in the DC Comics Universe. There's so many in fact, that it can be difficult to determine which is the greatest and/or the strongest. In the case of Superman, the Last Son of Krypton is near invincible. However there are some things that he is vulnerable to, such as kryptonite (irradiated pieces from his homeworld), and magic, among a few other things. But, can the ring of a Green Lantern contain the Man of Steel? It's an interesting question worth exploring, one that the comics may have the answers to.

While it's rare to see Superman in conflict with any member of the Green Lantern Corps, there are a notable few that help determine what would win out: the physical strength of a Kryptonian, or the mentally-based well of willpower that comes from a Green Lantern's ring. The first meeting (from The New 52 Justice League re-launch) of Superman and Green Lantern Hal Jordan is a great place to start.

Jordan had already teamed up with Batman to investigate Darkseid's incoming invasion, and they tried to connect with Superman to see if he knew anything. However, fists came before words due to a misunderstanding of intentions. Green Lantern tried to contain Superman with the power of his ring, creating constructs of chains to try and contain him. This just made Superman smile, finding it funny. Superman then breaks the chains with minimal effort, which shocks Jordan.

While this specific scenario does seem to offer an open and shut solution, there are other examples that make the answer somewhat more ambiguous. It seems as though it may depend on the context of the situation as well as the specific individual wearing a Green Lantern ring. The rings are a very unique tool. While each ring allows the individual to tap into the green light of willpower, it is solely up to the wearer's individual willpower to determine how strong they become, as well as their own imagination in creating constructs.

For instance, Green Lantern Kyler Rayner once managed to synthesize and replicate the radiation of kryptonite in order to subdue a manipulated Superman. Another time, Green Lantern John Stewart once created and sent pinpoints of green light right into Superman's eyes to blind and pain him - a unique solution to remove a superhero with very little weaknesses from blocking his path. Green Lanterns have also proven themselves quite capable with other Kryptonians in general, such as with General Zod.

While Hal Jordan's arrest of Zod was certainly not an easy victory, it was a great one. Their battle took place on Zod's adopted world of Jekuul, which is notable due to the reason that it orbits around two yellow suns, essentially providing Zod (and his family) with even more power. However, Jordan's great ability and intense levels of willpower won the day, creating several large and effective constructs that were too much for Zod to bear over time.

At the end of the day, it seems as though there are some conditions when answering whether or not Superman is vulnerable to a Green Lantern ring. Essentially, it all comes down to the conditions of the battle itself: Is Superman in his right mind? Is he holding back? Also, it comes down to whoever is wearing the ring and how much willpower they have. Hal Jordan has proven himself successful, as have others. However, not every Lantern can tap into the same levels of willpower. Therefore, because Hal Jordan is considered one of the greatest Lanterns, and even he struggles to contain Kryptonians, Superman would probably have the upper hand when faced with the average Green Lantern Corp member and their rings.
