The return of Hal Jordan to the title role of The Green Lantern was anything but a nostalgia trip, as the rise of the Blackstars saw Hal turned to their side, and the destruction of the Green Lantern Corps. Thankfully, he's back to being a Lantern... but things definitely aren't back to normal. After a cryptic tease of his new ring offering new abilities and technology, Hal has finally shown just what could be possible in The Green Lantern: Season Two.

On a certain level, considering everything that Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp's The Green Lantern has already attempted, it should come as no surprise at all to see Hal Jordan's emerald ring blessed with abilities and attacks previously considered impossible. But even for a magic ring with limits and a power source as roughly sketched as that of the Green Lanterns, the ability to shoot a shrink ray, or de-evolve a sentient creature is going to raise an eyebrow or two once fans catch wind.

Strange as those uses might sound, considering they seem as much science-fiction as cosmic fantasy, they are exactly what's delivered in Issue #1 of the new series. The expectations were set when Hal Jordan's efforts in saving the Corps earned him his very own medal ceremony -- before being ominously handed a "new, upgraded power battery, promised some time ago. You may find some of its features... interesting." Interesting or not, no reader could have expected to see Hal run headlong into a massively threatening onslaught of enraged ape warriors, with a space lawman made of sapient salt backing him up. And, as it turns out, offering him inspiration to test his ring's brand new, absurd abilities.

Green Lantern DC Comic New Ring Powers

Is it strange to accept that Hal's Green Lantern ring is now outfitted with shrink ay technology? Intensely. But the ability to rewind an enemy race's evolution, reducing them to small mammals, then land-walking fish? Hal Jordan has opened a Pandora's box.
