A new Green Lantern movie has been in the works since 2014, and here's everything we know about the current status of the long-gestating DCEU project. While not on the level of pop culture juggernauts like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, Green Lantern is still a superhero treasured by many DC fans, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, the character has yet to really get his due in a live-action setting, and definitely not on the big screen.

The only Green Lantern-specific movie made to date was the 2011 effort directed by Casino Royale's Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, the most widely known person to assume the Green Lantern mantle in DC's comic books, and the most commonly adapted for either movies or TV shows. A critical failure and a box office bomb, Green Lantern 2011 has become synonymous with bad comic book movies, and even Reynolds himself has regularly blasted the film and stressed how much it misses the mark.

Yet, Green Lantern is a popular enough hero that one $200 million misstep shouldn't end his movie career, and fans have been waiting for a new theatrical take on the character ever since. A new Green Lantern movie still has yet to materialize, despite reports repeatedly stressing it was coming. Here's the most current information we have on the project.

Following Man of Steel laying the groundwork for the DCEU, it was announced in 2014 that a Green Lantern Corps movie was in development that would reboot the character. By 2015, Warner Bros. had set Green Lantern Corps for a theatrical release date of July 24, 2020, which obviously didn't stick. The updates since have been few, although Geoff Johns maintained after January 2018's change in DC Films leadership that Green Lantern Corps was still in development. A report in November 2019 claimed that Johns would be delivering a new script for the film by the end of the year, but it's unclear if that happened, or what the project's current status is. Notably, a Green Lantern TV show is in the works for HBO Max.

Green Lantern Movie Story Info

Green Lantern Corps Hal Jordan John Stewart SR

There hasn't been much revealed about the story plans for Green Lantern Corps, which has gone through several rewrites already. What's known is that, as the title implies, a whole squad of Green Lanterns would be featured, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart leading the team. Johns also said at one point that the movie would reimagine the titular group while also paying respect to the comic book mythology, which he himself had a hand in creating.

Green Lantern Movie Cast

Tom Cruise Green Lantern Movie Hal Jordan

There's no confirmed casting for Green Lantern Corps, or any other possible Green Lantern movie. Tom Cruise was heavily rumored for the Hal Jordan role for quite some time, but that didn't pan out. Tyrese Gibson threw his hat in the ring for John Stewart, and reportedly met with DC about the role, but it doesn't appear anything came out of that either. Chris Pine has also been rumored in the past for Jordan, and Sterling K. Brown said he'd like to play Stewart, but for now, everything is up in the air.
